Reading Program: Lexia Reading

Reading Program Overview

Intervention: Lexia Reading

Program Description

Lexia Reading is a computerized reading program that provides phonics
instruction and gives students independent practice in basic reading skills.
Lexia Reading is designed to supplement regular classroom instruction. It
is designed to support skill development in the five areas of reading
instruction identified by the National Reading Panel.

Research

Two studies of Lexia Reading meet What Works Clearinghouse (WWC)
evidence standards and one study meets WWC evidence standards with
reservations. The three studies included 314 students in kindergarten and
first grade in two states.3

Based on these three studies, the WWC considers the extent of evidence
for Lexia Reading to be small for alphabetics, fluency, comprehension, and
general reading achievement.

Effectiveness

Lexia Reading was found to have potentially positive effects on alphabetics,
no discernible effects on fluency, potentially positive effects on comprehension,
and no discernible effects on general reading achievement.

  2. HEY! Wait a minute...

This sounds amazingly like a program I received to use for free with a group of failing kids. They couldn't read at grade level, and truthfully, some couldn't really read at all.

I remember the word LEXIA. Did this program exist back in the 90's? Because if it's the same one—my students got it!

If it's the same one, I want it NOW. Because it worked with them (along with a lot of intense 1-on-1 teaching from me); but it worked. It worked! It played its part!

I have to hear more about this. Where can I find these people? I've thought longingly of that program since then!

What can I do? Where can I find it? Give me a number to call! Because I'm now teaching reading online, and I'm still with my beloved struggling readers.

    Let me in!
