2. Vocabulary Sparkle, VOCABULARY SPARKLE! VOCABULARY SPARKLE Have your children stand or sit on their desk so they are facing the teacher. Start at either end of room and give the first child a vocabulary word or definition. They say the definition or kid friendly sentence if given the vocabulary word or they must give the word when a definition is given. The child that cannot give an answer says SPARKLE and must sit down. Continue the game until you are down to one child! The last child that has answered all the vocabulary gets a small bag of popcorn. Every child that answers a hard vocabulary question correctly gets a pretzel, stamp, or a sticker. They love this and it is great review for challenging academic vocabulary! Start with a mix of easy and hard words to get the kids excited and ready to study the challenging academic words.

3. Vocabulary Pictionary/Charades, using Vocabulary Pictionary/Charades is a fast and fun way to review testing or spelling vocabulary words with your class as a fun word-work activity. Students can draw or act out the words but must remain silent.

4. Word Sorts, Students receive a stack of word cards containing word families or word categories that have several types of contrasting sounds, patterns, or meanings. Each student must then figure out the patterns that exist within the stack, and sort the cards accordingly. By doing this, students construct their own knowledge of words, creating a lasting understanding of how language works. This process contrasts greatly to the simple memorization related to traditional spelling tests.  The process of sorting words into various categories is the heart of word study. By categorizing different words by certain elements, young children make sense of words and patterns within words. Word sorts combine both constructivist learning and teacher-directed instruction.wiki

5. Swinging Monkey/HangmanIntroduce spelling words, test vocabulary or vocabulary for a story by playing "Swinging Monkey" (a kinder version of “Hangman”). Begin by putting blanks on the board that correspond to the number of letters in a word you want to discuss. Call on individual students to guess letters. For a miss first draw a tree, then a branch, then an arm hanging from the branch. Keep adding body, head, another arm, two legs, and a tail. After the word is revealed, read it in context and discuss the meaning of the word. [DOC] vocabulary review activities

6. Last Man Standing, The teacher or a student introduces a theme, word, science category, or a tier 3 academic word, after introducing the word all students stand up and get ready to play. Explain to students that they must find a word to add to the discussion before the teacher gets to the count of 3 or they must sit down. The student must give a word that relates to the theme or word before the end of the count and are given a high five or other praise when correct. The game can be played using synonyms or antonyms as a variation, but if students can't find a word they must pass the ball and sit down.

7. SWATSo easy.....and fun! Write the vocabulary words on the board or an overhead transparency (the swatting won’t erase them from the screen). Write them randomly not necessarily in rows. Two students each have a fly swatter. Read a definition and the first student to "swat" the word gets a point for their team. Play until all the words are done. Do some words more than once to make sure they're paying attention. (You could also put some words from past vocabulary lessons on the board as a refresher.) [DOC] vocabulary review activities

8. The Legendary Lands, the academic vocabulary board consists of 18 mythical and legendary lands with an ocean at its center. Some lands are named and others are to be named by the new explorers of “The legendary Lands”. The lands have a numerical value of 5 florins to 100 florins based on strategic locations and previous development. The value of the land is used to determine taxes paid to players at the end of game rounds. As the game progresses, players use florins to build, Railway Spurs, Sky Ships, Train Stations, Aerodromes, Universities, Sky Villages, Libraries, Sea Ports, Governments, and Sky Libraries or … use your imagination. Each player begins the game with 250 florins, one randomly selected conveyance ticket, 1 professor, and 4 students on any 5 florin land. THE LEGENDARY LANDS
