Beaded Number lines & Number Sense

Hands-On Minds-On Using Beaded Numberlines | Building “Math Force” Number Sense with Beaded Number lines
The 100 Bead Beaded Number Line is an awesome almost free math manipulative you can use with Kindergarteners through 6th grade for deep mathematical thinking and learning. Building number sense and numeracy is intuitive using a beaded number line. Starting with the basics and moving into the very complex computational and mathematical problem solving is anchored in a foundation of hands-on learning. Using the wisdom-of-the-hands slams the door on critical shortfalls in your student's math learning and understanding.

Number sense refers to "an intuitive understanding of numbers, their magnitude, relationships, and how they are affected by operations".  Number sense can include mental shortcuts (Hurestics), "Math Tricks", and math techniques that help students build mental math capacity. Developing number sense understanding in our students is greatly improved when teachers use metacognition (Math Think Alouds), Number Talks, and explicitly teaching the 13 mathematical heuristics. Moving students through the CONCRETE, PICTORIAL, and finally to the ABSTRACT is key to student success and deep math concept understanding.  Using beaded number lines start with the basics, counting, adding, subtracting, composing numbers, and decomposing numbers.  Learning and exploring numbers and operations using hands-on visual models like beaded number lines and connecting their use with number talks helps develop number sense and mathematical problem-solving. Representing numbers in a concrete way and talking about numbers and operations builds deep number sense. When we short-cut these foundations we doom our students to years of failure. Herculean number sense is needed before we move students into more abstract math in any meaningful way.
