Nemesis (the goddess who teaches Narcissus a lesson)
Artemis (the goddess of the hunt and protector of young women, who takes pity on Echo)
Ares (the god of war and lover of Aphrodite, who is jealous of Narcissus' beauty)

Narrator: In Ancient Greece, there lived a handsome young man named Narcissus, who was so vain that he fell in love with his own reflection. One day, he met Echo, a mountain nymph, who was also in love with him. However, Echo could only repeat the last words that were spoken to her. Let's join them on their journey.

(Scene opens in a forest. Narcissus is admiring himself in a pool of water while Echo watches from behind a tree.)

Narcissus: (admiring his reflection) Oh, how beautiful I am. I have never seen anyone as handsome as I am.

Echo: (softly) handsome as I am.

Narcissus: (turns around) Who's there?

Echo: (steps forward) It's me, Echo.

Narcissus: (dismissive) Oh, you. Why do you bother me?

Echo: (desperately) I love you. Please, notice me.

Narcissus: (laughs) You love me? Why wouldn't you? I am the most beautiful creature in this forest.

Echo: (repeats) most beautiful creature in this forest.

Nemesis: (appears from behind a tree) Narcissus, your vanity has gone too far. You need to learn a lesson.

Narcissus: (arrogantly) Who are you to talk to me like that?

Nemesis: (smiling) I am Nemesis, the goddess who brings revenge to those who deserve it.

Artemis: (appears from behind another tree) Leave him alone, Nemesis. He is just a young man who doesn't know any better.

Nemesis: (shrugs) Very well, Artemis. But he needs to understand that his actions have consequences.

Ares: (appears from behind a third tree) I agree with Nemesis. Narcissus is too full of himself.

Aphrodite: (appears from behind a fourth tree) What are you all talking about? (notices Narcissus) Oh, he is so beautiful. I am jealous.

Nemesis: (smiling) Aphrodite, you are not the only one.

Narcissus: (confused) What are you talking about?

Echo: (sadly) Narcissus, please see that there is more to life than just your reflection.

(Narcissus ignores Echo and continues to admire himself. The scene fades to black.)

Narrator: In the end, Narcissus never realized the error of his ways and died staring at his own reflection. Echo, consumed by her love for him, wasted away until only her voice remained. The gods and goddesses of the forest and mountains punished Narcissus by turning him into a flower that bloomed by the water's edge, forever admiring its own beauty.

Readers Theater: The Greek Myth of Narcissus and Echo

Once upon a time in Ancient Greece, there was a handsome young man named Narcissus. He was so beautiful that he became famous for his looks, and many people, both men and women, were in love with him. However, Narcissus was so full of himself that he ignored them all.

One day, the goddess Nemesis saw how Narcissus treated others and decided to teach him a lesson. She led him to a clear pool of water and waited for him to catch a glimpse of his reflection. Narcissus was so struck by his own beauty that he fell in love with his own reflection, staring at it for hours on end.

Echo, a mountain nymph, was also in love with Narcissus, but she could not speak except to repeat the last words that were spoken to her. She followed Narcissus into the woods, hoping to catch his attention, but he was too absorbed in his own reflection to notice her.

Eventually, Echo's love for Narcissus consumed her, and she wasted away until all that was left of her was her voice. Narcissus, still obsessed with his reflection, could not tear himself away from the pool and eventually died there, unable to reach the one he loved.

From that day forward, the goddesses of the forest and the mountains cursed Narcissus, turning him into a flower that blooms by the water's edge, forever admiring its own beauty.

NARRATOR 1
NARRATOR 2

Narrator 1: Narcissus was a young man who was famous for his beauty. Everyone who saw him was captivated by his stunning looks, but Narcissus was vain and proud.

Narrator 2: One day, Echo, a mountain nymph, saw Narcissus walking in the woods and immediately fell in love with him. She followed him, trying to speak to him, but Narcissus didn't notice her.

Echo: (calls out) Hello! Is someone there?

Narcissus: (ignores Echo and keeps walking)

Echo: (tries again) Hello! Please, wait!

Narcissus: (stops and looks around) Who's there?

Echo: (hides behind a tree) It's me, Echo. Please, don't be afraid.

Narcissus: (arrogantly) Why should I be afraid of a mere nymph?

Echo: (sadly) I have been struck by the arrows of Eros, and I cannot help but love you.

Narcissus: (laughs) Love me? Of course, you do! Who wouldn't? But I have no time for you, nymph.

Narrator 1: Narcissus continued his walk, leaving Echo behind. Echo was heartbroken and retreated to the mountains, where she pined away until nothing was left of her but her voice.

Narrator 2: Narcissus continued to reject all who loved him, including a young man named Ameinias who was so heartbroken that he prayed to the gods for revenge.

Narrator 1: The goddess Nemesis, who was the goddess of revenge, heard Ameinias' prayer and decided to punish Narcissus for his arrogance.

Narrator 2: One day, as Narcissus was walking in the woods, he saw his reflection in a pool of water and fell in love with it. He became so obsessed with his own reflection that he could not tear himself away from it.

Narcissus: (gazing at his reflection) How beautiful I am! I could stare at myself forever.

Narrator 1: Narcissus stayed there, staring at his reflection, until he died of starvation and thirst.

Narrator 2: When the gods saw what had happened to Narcissus, they felt sorry for him and transformed him into a flower, which we now know as the narcissus.

Narrator 1: And so, the story of Narcissus and Echo became a cautionary tale about the dangers of vanity and the consequences of rejecting those who love us.
