Lesson Title: Mix and Match Storytelling with Flashcards

Synopsis: In this writing lesson, students will use a set of flashcards with various characters, settings, and plot elements to create unique and imaginative stories. By mixing and matching the flashcard prompts, students will build creative writing and storytelling skills. They can be used for Quick Writes and brainstorming story ideas.

Here are 10 ways to inspire writing with these flashcards :

10. Story Laboratory: Concocting Narratives from Flashcards

Overview:
- The teacher will introduce a set of 100 flashcards with ideas like "dragon," "wizard," "alien spaceship," "invisibility cloak," etc.
- Students will work in small groups of 3-4. Each group will receive the full set of 100 flashcards.
- Groups will shuffle their cards and select 10 random cards. These 10 cards will serve as the basis for their story.
- Groups will use their 10 selected cards to outline a short story with a beginning, middle and end. They should aim to incorporate and connect all the random elements.
- Groups will write out their full story and present it to the class.
- The teacher will encourage creative thinking throughout the outlining and writing process. Strange combinations and plot twists are welcome!

Example: A group's flashcards might include: mermaid, buried treasure, pirate ship, wizard, unicorn, castle, robot dog, force field, and shrinking potion. Their story could involve a mermaid and wizard teaming up to find buried treasure guarded by pirates. With help from a robot dog and using a shrinking potion and force field, they could sneak into the pirate castle unseen. The unicorn could act as transportation.

With the mix-and-match flashcard prompts, each group will create a totally unique story! The lesson builds imagination, cooperation, writing skills and presentation ability.
