Dear Fourth Grade Parents,
Welcome to the 2024-2025 school year! I am excited to work
with your child in Sean Taylor's 4th Grade Math class. This year, we will cover
a wide range of mathematical concepts designed to build a strong foundation for
your child's future success in mathematics. Below is an overview of what will
be covered, what will be graded, and the grade-level standards we will focus
on.
What Will Be Covered in 4th Grade Math
Throughout the year, students will be exploring a variety of
math concepts that are essential for their development. These include:
- Multiplication
and Division
- Standard:
4.OA.A.2
Students will learn to multiply and divide within 1,000 to solve word problems that involve multiplicative comparison. For example, students might solve problems where they have to determine how many times one quantity is larger or smaller than another. - Multi-Step
Word Problems
- Standard:
4.OA.A.3
We will work on solving multi-step word problems using all four operations (addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division). Students will also learn to interpret remainders, understanding how the remainder is a fraction of the divisor in division problems. - Place
Value and Operations with Multi-Digit Numbers
- Standard:
4.NBT.A.1
Students will explore the concept of place value and understand that in a multi-digit whole number, a digit in one place represents ten times what it represents in the place to its right. This concept is crucial as it forms the basis for their understanding of larger numbers and operations. - Standard:
4.NBT.A.2
Students will read, write, and compare multi-digit whole numbers using base-ten numerals, number names, and expanded form. They will also use symbols such as >, <, and = to compare numbers. - Standard:
4.NBT.B.4
We will focus on fluently adding and subtracting multi-digit whole numbers using a standard algorithm. This fluency is essential for their future success in mathematics. - Standard:
4.NBT.B.5
Students will learn to multiply a whole number of up to four digits by a one-digit whole number. This will help them solve more complex multiplication problems as they advance in their math education.
What Will Be Graded
In our math class, students' grades will be based on several
components:
- Classwork:
Daily practice and in-class activities will help reinforce the concepts we
are learning. These will be graded regularly to ensure that students are
keeping up with the material.
- Homework:
Assignments given to practice the skills taught in class will be graded to
assess understanding and to encourage consistent practice.
- Quizzes
and Tests: These will be given periodically to assess students'
understanding of the concepts we have covered. They will be an important
part of the overall grade.
- Projects:
Occasionally, students will work on projects that allow them to apply what
they have learned in a real-world context. These will be graded on both
content and presentation.
Grade Level Standards and Benchmarks 1st
Quarter
By the end of the 1st quarter, students should be
able to:
- Solve
word problems involving multiplicative comparison within 1,000
(4.OA.A.2).
- Solve
multi-step word problems using all four operations, interpreting
remainders appropriately (4.OA.A.3).
- Understand
place value in multi-digit numbers and apply it to compare and operate
with those numbers (4.NBT.A.1, 4.NBT.A.2).
- Fluently
add and subtract multi-digit numbers using standard algorithms
(4.NBT.B.4).
- Multiply
a four-digit number by a one-digit number with accuracy (4.NBT.B.5).
