When School Becomes the Thing Children Are Trying to Escape

How Fidelity, Compliance, Data, and Broken Relationships Are Producing Absenteeism, Teacher Burnout, Behavioral Chaos, and Academic Failure

The central problem is not that schools have stopped caring about children.

It is more uncomfortable than that.

Schools have increasingly built systems in which caring about children is subordinated to demonstrating fidelity to systems and policy.

The language sounds reassuring.

Fidelity to the curriculum.

Fidelity to the instructional model.

Data-driven decision making.

Evidence-based practice.

MTSS.

RTI.

PBIS.

Progress monitoring.

Common assessments.

Learning targets.

Standards alignment.

Implementation fidelity.

Every one of these ideas can be useful.

The problem begins when the institution forgets what they are for.

Because education is not a software implementation.

Children are not data points.

Teachers are not curriculum-delivery mechanisms.

Parents are not compliance partners.

And a classroom is not a production line in which sufficiently faithful implementation eventually produces a standardized human being.

The evidence surrounding chronic absenteeism should make us uncomfortable. The U.S. Department of Education reported that more than 14 million students were chronically absent in 2021–22, with chronic absence defined as missing at least 10 percent of school days. Those things aren't opposites.

Reading Boot Camp explicitly describes itself as expecting students to become exceptional readers, exposing students to deep curriculum, using Socratic learning, differentiating through scaffolding and cooperative learning, and developing curiosity, imagination, resilience, passion, and creativity. That's the piece the modern education-industrial system routinely misses.

Engagement isn't frosting on rigor.

It is one of the mechanisms through which rigor becomes possible.


III. THE FIRST FAILURE: WE REPLACED RELATIONSHIPS WITH PROCEDURES

A child walks into a classroom carrying an entire universe.

Family.

Language.

Culture.

Fear.

Humor.

Curiosity.

Trauma.

Talent.

Interests.

Embarrassment.

Executive-function limitations.

Previous failures.

Previous victories.

A teacher's first job is therefore not merely to determine:

“What standard does this child need to master?”

IV. THE SECOND FAILURE: WE TURNED DATA FROM A TOOL INTO A CULTURE

Data is extraordinarily useful.

Data is also extraordinarily seductive.

Because numbers feel objective.

A number cannot complain.

A graph does not demand emotional labor.

A dashboard does not ask the principal to sit beside a crying child.

A spreadsheet doesn't tell you that the teacher is exhausted.

A benchmark doesn't tell you that a child is terrified of being called upon.

And a fidelity checklist doesn't tell you that the lesson is dead.

The danger is not data.

The danger is data becoming a substitute for professional judgment.

The result is a bizarre inversion:

Instead of asking whether the system is serving the child, we ask whether the child is complying with the system.

That is backwards.

The Swedish Individual Development Plan provides an interesting counterexample—not because Sweden has discovered a magical educational formula, but because the structure of the IUP is explicitly both retrospective and forward-looking. The question becomes:

“Where is this child going, and what do we need to do next?”

V. THE THIRD FAILURE: FIDELITY BECAME MORE IMPORTANT THAN FIDELITY TO THE CHILD

This may be the most important distinction in the entire argument.

There are two kinds of fidelity.

Fidelity to the program

Did the teacher:

  • use the prescribed lesson?

  • follow the pacing guide?

  • administer the assessment?

  • use the required language?

  • implement the protocol?

  • document the intervention?

  • follow the behavior matrix?

Fidelity to the child

Did the teacher:

  • notice confusion?

  • notice disengagement?

  • understand the child's strengths?

  • adapt instruction?

  • preserve dignity?

  • build competence?

  • maintain high expectations?

  • respond to the child's actual needs?

  • create a reason to return tomorrow?

The first is easy to audit.

The second is much harder.

And therein lies the institutional problem.

Organizations measure what they can reliably count.

But the most consequential variables in education are often relational.

Trust.

Belonging.

Curiosity.

Hope.

Agency.

Identity.

Courage.

Perseverance.

Intellectual excitement.

The institution therefore begins optimizing the measurable proxies.

And eventually the proxy becomes the goal.

That is Goodhart's Law applied to schooling.


VI. THE FOURTH FAILURE: WE TREATED ART, CRAFT, MUSIC, AND PLAY AS EXTRAS

This is where your Scandinavian influence becomes especially interesting.

And there is an important terminology correction.

The Finnish term you're probably reaching for is käsityö—crafts/craft and design—not “katsuyatsu.”

The Finnish National Agency for Education describes crafts as a common subject throughout primary and lower-secondary education, involving both technical and textile work, planning, materials, tools, creative production, self-assessment, peer feedback, perseverance, responsibility, independent work, collaboration, and constructive interaction. In Sweden, the related tradition is slöjd, generally rendered in English as sloyd.

And this matters enormously.

Because the American educational conversation frequently treats these things as enrichment.

Finland's curriculum does not.

The child is not merely producing a craft object.

The child is learning to:

  • plan

  • visualize

  • manipulate materials

  • persist

  • solve problems

  • make decisions

  • revise

  • evaluate

  • collaborate

  • create

  • experience competence

That is executive function.

That is agency.

That is cognition.

That is culture.

That is motor development.

That is emotional regulation.

That is identity.

That is learning.

The hand is not the enemy of the brain.

What happens when I repeatedly disrupt everyone else's right to learn?

Compassion without boundaries becomes permissiveness.

Consequences without relationships become punishment.

Rules without belonging become oppression.

Relationships without boundaries become chaos.

The answer is not “be stricter.”

Nor is it “be nicer.”

The answer is:

high warmth + high expectations + predictable boundaries + meaningful consequences + restoration.

The teacher should not have to choose between being compassionate and being in charge.


VIII. THE EXECUTIVE-FUNCTION PROBLEM WE KEEP PRETENDING IS A CLASSROOM-MANAGEMENT PROBLEM

But classroom management is not magic.

Children have to develop these capacities.

And development requires practice.

Repetition.

Movement.

The system responds to the consequences of excessive systemization by adding more systemization.


X. THEN WE BLAME THE TEACHER

This is perhaps the cruelest part.

When students are disengaged:

Classroom management problem.

When attendance collapses:

Parent problem.

When reading scores decline:

Teacher problem.

When behavior explodes:

Teacher needs professional development.

When teachers burn out:

Teacher resilience problem.

When families leave:

Communication problem.

When intervention fails:

Fidelity problem.

And when the program doesn't work:

We need better implementation.

Notice what rarely gets asked:

Could the architecture itself be producing some of these outcomes?

That question is much more dangerous.

Because if the architecture is producing the problem, buying another curriculum isn't the solution.


XI. ABSENTEEISM IS NOT JUST AN ATTENDANCE PROBLEM

This is where the attendance crisis becomes diagnostic.

A school can say:

“We need to improve attendance.”

Fine.

But attendance is an outcome.

The deeper question is:

What causes a child to repeatedly decide that school is not worth attending?

Of course, there are many answers.

Transportation.

Illness.

Family responsibilities.

Mental health.

Housing instability.

Economic hardship.

Bullying.

Disability.

School climate.

Academic frustration.

Anxiety.

Family circumstances.

And disengagement.

So we should be careful not to turn the entire attendance crisis into a referendum on school relationships.

But we should also be intellectually honest enough to recognize:

If a child repeatedly chooses not to be somewhere, the environment deserves examination.

That's not sentimentalism.

That's evidence.


XII. THE READING BOOT CAMP LESSON

Ask:

What assumptions embedded in the intervention may be wrong for this population?

Now data becomes useful.

Because data is being used to interrogate the system, not merely the child.


XV. A NEW DEFINITION OF FIDELITY

This is where I think Reading Sage has an idea worth naming.

Fidelity to the Child

A school should be faithful to its mission.

A teacher should be faithful to evidence.

An intervention should be faithful to its essential instructional principles.

But no program should demand greater fidelity than the child deserves.

Fidelity should mean:

  • fidelity to developmental science

  • fidelity to evidence

  • fidelity to professional judgment

  • fidelity to individual student needs

  • fidelity to human dignity

  • fidelity to high expectations

  • fidelity to relationships

  • fidelity to intellectual curiosity

Not:

fidelity to the laminated binder.


XVI. THE NEW SCHOOL OPERATING SYSTEM

If we actually wanted to redesign schools around the child, the hierarchy would look something like this:

Vocabulary.

Content knowledge.

Feedback.

Scaffolding.

Retrieval.

Deliberate practice.

7. RIGOR

Socratic inquiry.

Complex texts.

Problem solving.

Argument.

Creation.

Analysis.

8. ACCOUNTABILITY

Clear expectations.

XVII. WHAT SCHOOLS SHOULD STOP DOING

Stop pretending that:

More rewards = better behavior.

More programs = better schools.

Does the school contain music?

Does it contain art?

Does it contain making?

Does it contain intellectually serious conversation?

Do children have opportunities to move?

Do they build things?

Do they perform?

Do they explain?

Do they argue?

Do they create?

Do they fail safely?

Do they repair mistakes?

Do they experience genuine mastery?

And finally:

Would a child actually miss this place if they couldn't come tomorrow?

That may be one of the most revealing school-quality questions we could possibly ask.


XIX. THE POINT IS NOT TO RETURN TO SOME GOLDEN AGE

This argument should not become nostalgia.

We don't need to romanticize the past.

Schools have always had problems.

Relationships can be dysfunctional.

Teachers can be ineffective.

Parents can be difficult.

Students can behave badly.

Traditional discipline can become abusive.

“Good relationships” cannot substitute for literacy science.

Craft cannot substitute for mathematics.

Joy cannot substitute for instruction.

And compassion cannot substitute for accountability.

That's precisely why the argument needs to be more sophisticated.

The choice is not rigor OR relationships.

It is:

Rigor through relationships.

Not permissiveness.

Not chaos.

Not “let children do whatever they want.”

Not abandoning standards.

Instead:

belonging + boundaries

joy + rigor

agency + accountability

relationships + explicit instruction

data + judgment

structure + flexibility

high expectations + human dignity

That is the synthesis.


XX. THE READING SAGE THESIS

And we shouldn't be surprised when administrators respond by demanding even more fidelity.

Because the machine has learned only one solution:

More machine.


XXI. THE FINAL IRONY

The most important word in education may be relationship.

Yet relationship is almost impossible to standardize.

You cannot put it neatly into a pacing guide.

You cannot purchase it in a curriculum adoption.

You cannot outsource it to an app.

You cannot produce it with a dashboard.

You cannot measure it perfectly with a benchmark.

And you certainly cannot create it by telling a teacher:

“Follow the program with greater fidelity.”

A relationship is built through thousands of tiny human acts:

The teacher remembering the student's favorite book.

The teacher noticing the child is unusually quiet.

The teacher laughing with the class.

The student being allowed to make something.

The teacher reading aloud.

A song.

A joke.

A game.

A conversation.

A Socratic question.

A difficult text.

A successful attempt.

A second attempt.

A teacher saying:

“I know this is hard. We're going to figure it out.”

And the child believing them.

That is education.

Everything else is infrastructure.


RESTORATION OVER REFORM

Perhaps the greatest mistake in contemporary education reform is believing that the answer to a broken human system is always another system.

Sometimes the answer is much older.

Know the child.

Know the family.

Know the community.

Know your subject.

Set boundaries.

Give children meaningful work.

Let them use their hands.

Let them talk.

Let them move.

Let them make things.

Let them read great books.

Let them sing.

Let them argue intelligently.

Let them fail without humiliation.

Let them experience mastery.

And then use data—not as a weapon against teachers or children—but as a flashlight.

Ask what is working.

Ask what isn't.

Ask why.

Change course.

Try again.

That is what intelligent systems do.

OG is what keeps the system honest — it is the reason a child's placement is never a guess and a plateau is never allowed to hide for six weeks.

Montessori supplies the how. 3.3 Tier 3 — Intensive, Individualized, IEP-Integrated

Students who do not respond to Tier 2 — or who present with a suspected or documented specific learning disability — move to Tier 3: daily 1:1 or 1:2 Orton-Gillingham intervention delivered by a trained interventionist, fully integrated with (not parallel to) any existing IEP or 504 plan.

      Entry trigger: insufficient response to two full Tier 2 cycles (typically 12–16 weeks), or an existing IEP/MET eligibility for a specific learning disability in reading.

      Dosage: daily, 30–45 minutes, individualized pacing through the 181-lesson sequence — a Tier 3 student may spend three weeks on a lesson a Tier 1 classroom moved through in three days.

Relationship-Driven MTSS

Solving the Two-Sigma Problem Through the Arts — Three RTI Case Studies and a District-Level Attendance Strategy

The three students profiled here are composites drawn from common patterns seen across 26 years of RTI and literacy-intervention casework — not identifiable individuals. None is currently on an IEP; all are presented at the point where a Tier 2 team is deciding whether Tier 3 is warranted. Each profile intentionally represents a different reason a child can arrive at that decision point — a processing-based reading disability, an instructional-discontinuity gap, and a second-language-acquisition trajectory look similar on a single fluency score and require three different responses. But all three share the same underlying lever, and that lever is the subject of this packet.

The Real Lever: Relationships, the Arts, and the Two-Sigma Problem

Chronic absenteeism is not a scheduling problem. It's a relationship problem wearing an attendance report as a disguise.

In 1984, Benjamin Bloom described what became known as the "two-sigma problem": students who received one-on-one tutoring performed, on average, two standard deviations better than students taught in a conventional classroom — a gap large enough that the average tutored student outperformed roughly 98% of students who weren't. Bloom's challenge to the field was direct: find a method that reproduces that effect at the scale of a normal classroom, because no school system can staff a personal tutor for every child.

Twenty-six years of RTI, literacy-intervention, and classroom practice have pointed to the same answer over and over, and it isn't a curriculum or a pacing guide. It's relationship. What a 1:1 tutor actually supplies isn't just individualized pacing — it's a child who feels seen, an adult who notices what they're proud of, and a feedback loop tight enough that effort visibly pays off. Arts-integrated instruction — music, painting, hands-on craft, readers' theater — reproduces that same feedback loop at classroom scale: a child gets to be good at something, in front of people who matter to them, on a timeline short enough to feel the win.
