Academic Vocabulary

Academic vocabulary knowledge is critical for student success in the information age. All academic disciplines, language, literature, history, philosophy, mathematics, and science, encompass vocabulary that provides students the foundations and structures key to building background knowledge. Classrooms need to be a rich environments of complex language that students can explore and study. We control vocabulary and language to a great extent today in our literature, speaking, and our lessons with a devastating cost to our students. Students get a "drummed down education" and find the classroom environment boring and unrewarding! Schools will be obsolete if they continue to serve a sanitized, language controlled, easy curriculum.
