A new teacher can walk into a school and hear:

"We're using structured literacy with phonemic awareness intervention through MTSS Tier 2, monitoring progress with DIBELS and CBM, while maintaining grade-level knowledge building through complex texts."

A parent may hear:

"Your child is below benchmark and may need an OG-based multisensory intervention."

And reasonably wonder:

What on earth does any of that mean?

This glossary is designed to translate the language of literacy into plain English.


PART I: THE BIG PICTURE — HOW PEOPLE HAVE ARGUED ABOUT READING

The Reading Wars

Definition: The long-running debate over the best way to teach children to read.

Historically, the major camps have included:

The "Reading Wars" are not really one single argument. They involve several overlapping questions:

What does it measure?
What does it not measure?
How should teachers interpret the score?

What should happen next?

That format would make this useful for a brand-new teacher who just wants to survive the acronym jungle and for an experienced literacy teacher who wants the historical and cognitive context behind the term.
