My strongest recommendation
The finished project should have three layers:
Layer 1: The 10-second definition
DIBELS: A set of brief assessments used to screen and monitor early literacy skills.
Layer 2: The teacher/parent explanation
DIBELS can help identify students who may be struggling with foundational skills, but it should not be treated as a complete diagnosis of why a child struggles.
Layer 3: The deeper context
What does it measure?
What does it not measure?
How should teachers interpret the score?
What are the limitations?
What should happen next?
That format would make this useful for a brand-new teacher who just wants to survive the acronym jungle and for an experienced literacy teacher who wants the historical and cognitive context behind the term.
The eventual finished glossary could easily contain 500–1,000+ terms and acronyms, including obscure but important terms from linguistics, reading research, special education, historical literacy instruction, assessment, Montessori, Orton-Gillingham, and the various generations of the Reading Wars.
And frankly, this feels like it could become a substantial Reading Sage reference book—something like:
THE LITERACY ROSSETTA STONE
A Plain-English Dictionary of Reading, Writing, Phonics, Dyslexia, the Science of Reading, Assessment, and the Great Reading Wars
or perhaps:
THE LITERACY ALPHABET SOUP

The second title is a little more fun. The first sounds like something that could sit on a literacy coach's shelf and intimidate people in a very satisfying way.
The Simple View of Reading (SVR) is a model that explains how reading comprehension is developed. It proposes that reading comprehension depends primarily on two distinct core components:

Here is what these terms mean in plain English:
- Decoding: This is the ability to use knowledge of the alphabetic system to convert written letters on a page into spoken words.
- Language Comprehension: This refers to oral language skills—the ability to understand spoken language. It includes things like vocabulary, grammar, sentence structure, and listening comprehension.
- Reading Comprehension: This is the ultimate goal of reading, which is constructing meaning from text.
Why the Multiplication Sign (\(\times\)) Matters
The SVR model uses a multiplication formula rather than an addition formula to show that a reader must have both skills to understand what they read. Because they are multiplied:
- If decoding is weak, reading comprehension will be limited, even if the person has excellent oral language skills.
- If language comprehension is weak, reading comprehension will also be limited, even if the person can sound out every word on the page perfectly.
For example, a student might have such strong decoding skills that they can read a sentence like "The photosynthesis process converts light energy..." with perfect pronunciation. However, if they do not have the vocabulary or background knowledge to understand those words, they will have absolutely no idea what the sentence actually means. Truly understanding text requires the successful combination of both decoding and language comprehension
Scarborough's Reading Rope is a visual model that describes reading as the integration of multiple strands.
If the Simple View of Reading shows us the "big picture" formula, the Reading Rope zoom in on the specific skills required. It represents reading as a single, strong rope woven out of two main sections—which correspond to the two parts of the Simple View of Reading—each made up of smaller, individual "strands":
1. Word Recognition Strands
These are the strands that help a reader learn to pull words off the page. They include:
- Phonological awareness: Understanding the sound structures of spoken language.
- Decoding: Converting written letters into spoken words using alphabetic knowledge.
- Sight recognition: Recognizing words automatically.
2. Language Comprehension Strands
These are the strands that help a reader actually make sense of what those words mean. They include:
- Background knowledge: Prior knowledge that helps the reader understand new information.
- Vocabulary: The words a person understands and uses.
- Language structures: Understanding how sentences are put together.
- Verbal reasoning: The ability to think logically about language and look beyond literal meaning.
- Literacy knowledge: Familiarity with print concepts, genres, and text structures.
How the Rope Works
The magic of the "rope" metaphor is in how these strands interact over time. As a child practices and gets better at reading, the Word Recognition strands become increasingly automatic, while the Language Comprehension strands become increasingly strategic.
When these strands are successfully woven and tightened together, skilled reading develops.
The most fundamental difference is that phonological awareness focuses entirely on spoken sounds, while phonics focuses on connecting those spoken sounds to written letters.
Phonological Awareness: The Spoken Sound System
- Definition: The ability to hear and manipulate the sound structures of spoken language.
- No Print Needed: This is an entirely auditory and oral skill. As a result, phonological awareness (including its sub-skill, phonemic awareness) does not require print.
- What it includes: Phonological awareness is an "umbrella term". It covers a child's ability to identify spoken words in sentences, recognize syllables, spot rhymes, identify onsets and rimes, and manipulate individual sounds (phonemes).
- Example: If you ask a child, "What word do you get if you change the /m/ sound in 'mat' to /s/?" and they answer "sat," they are demonstrating phonemic awareness. No letters were shown or written down to complete this task.
Phonics: Connecting Sounds to Print
- Definition: Instruction that teaches the direct relationship between written letters or letter patterns (graphemes) and the speech sounds (phonemes) they represent.
- Requires Print: Phonics is specifically designed to help students decode unfamiliar written words by looking at letters on a page.
- What it includes: It involves teaching children letter-sound correspondences (like learning that the letter m represents the sound /m/) and spelling patterns (like consonant digraphs, vowel teams, or silent e).
- Example: A student looks at the printed word ship on a page. Using phonics, they identify that the written letters sh make the sound /sh/, the letter i makes /ĭ/, and the letter p makes /p/. They then blend those written symbols together to read the word: /sh/ + /ĭ/ + /p/ = ship.
