Smarter Balanced Assessments California Common Core Practice/Pilot Test is Replacing the STAR Testing in 2017? California CCSS Pilot Test for Math and ELA/Reading Expanded to Collect More Data and replace the STAR "Smarter Balanced Assessments" test in 2017? California students grades 3, 4 ,5, 6, 7, and 8 will be tested in Math and ELA reading sooner to prepare students, parents, schools for the more rigorous standards!
Is testing more students sooner the answer? Most politicians know implementing the Common Core test early means mass failures! Texas and New York implemented higher standards pilot test early without years of retooling classrooms lessons,years of teacher training and real CCSS curriculum, and yes most students performed miserably! Practice Common Core test will be available online until the summer of 2014! Good Luck!
California is expanding its Common Core Pilot Testing to more students and trying to get a waiver from the federal government to drop the STAR test reporting in 2014!
"The Smarter Balanced Practice Tests, including scoring guides, are now available for grades 3 through 8 and grade 11 in English-language arts (ELA) and mathematics. The Practice Tests provide a preview of the Smarter Balanced assessments, but do not reflect the full range of content that students may encounter on the actual assessments. As such, the practice tests should not be used to guide instructional decisions about students. No score reports are generated from the Practice Tests. The Practice Tests will be available through summer 2014."

Most of the Common Core assessments follow the standards of the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics (NCTM) and the National Council of Teachers of English (NCTE). State that have high standards based on the NCTM and NCTE will find the Common Core very familiar.
The Common Core Standards will be implemented fully in 2014-2015 in 47 states. The Standards are 1.5 standard deviations above today’s mean. Publishers (Harcourt Educational Measurement, CTB McGraw-Hill, Riverside Publishing (a Houghton Mifflin company), and NCS Pearson) and software developers (NWEA MAP) are writing and developing criterion/standards based assessments that meet the new higher standards. Teachers need to have access to assessments that give a baseline of skills and ability to meet these higher standards TODAY! The best free resource for teachers to do test prep and asses student readiness are the TAKS and CRCT released test. Teachers may want to use the grade higher to make sure they are evaluating student readiness.
