PERFORMANCE NOTES

Each script is written for 4 performers: 2 boys and 2 girls, in the tradition of Japanese and Korean manga — with vivid characters, emotional journeys, and themes that matter. Stage directions appear in [ brackets ] in blue italic text. Narrator lines set the scene. Each character has their name in bold red before their dialogue. Perform with feeling, pace yourselves between parts, and remember: the best readers theater happens when performers truly listen to each other. 

READERS THEATER № 1

THE LIGHT BETWEEN US

  Theme 1: Good Versus Evil 

The story of four young warriors who discover that the greatest battle is not between two armies — but inside one heart.

 

CAST OF CHARACTERS

  🌟 KIRA  —  A fearless girl of light, warm-hearted but fierce — she believes good lives in everyone.

  ✦ PART 1: THE SHADOW ARRIVES 

[ A glowing forest. Fireflies drift. KIRA and RIKU patrol the edge of the Brightwood. ]

NARRATOR:  The Brightwood had been peaceful for a hundred years. Until the night Shado came.

RIKU:  Kira! Something's wrong — the fireflies are going out. One by one.

KIRA:  I see it. Stay close.

[ SHADO steps from the darkness, eyes glowing faintly silver, cape swirling like smoke. ]

SHADO:  (coldly) You shouldn't be out here, little light. Darkness has claimed this forest.

RIKU:  (stepping in front of Kira) And WHO exactly are you?

SHADO:  They call me Shado. I was sent to extinguish everything you love.

KIRA:  (calmly, studying him) That's what you were TOLD to do. I'm asking what YOU want.

[ SHADO flinches. No one has ever asked him that before. ]

SHADO:  (quietly, almost to himself) ...What does it matter what I want?

[ LUNA drifts in, eyes closed, sensing the air around Shado like reading a book. ]

LUNA:  Kira... his heart isn't dark. It's frightened.

SHADO:  (angry) Stay OUT of my heart, oracle!

KIRA:  She sees truth. That's not an insult, Shado. That's a gift — for you.

[ A long, tense silence. The fireflies begin to flicker back on, slowly. ]

RIKU:  (whispering to Kira) What are you doing? He just said he came to destroy us!

KIRA:  (whispering back) He said what he was SENT to do. There's a difference, Riku.

  ✦ PART 2: THE BATTLE INSIDE 

[ Morning. An ancient stone bridge over a river of starlight. The four stand at its center. ]

NARRATOR:  The Master of Shadows had given Shado one command: bring Kira's light to him. But Shado hadn't moved.

SHADO:  You want to know why I serve the Shadow Master? Because he was the only one who ever chose me. My own village turned me away when I was six years old.

LUNA:  (gently) Because of your silver eyes.

SHADO:  They called them cursed. He called them powerful.

KIRA:  There's a difference between someone seeing your power and someone caring about YOU.

RIKU:  Yeah — one of them actually... cares. The other just uses you like a tool.

SHADO:  (sharply) You don't know anything about him!

KIRA:  Has he ever asked you what you want? Has he ever said — 'Shado, are you okay?'

[ Silence. The river of starlight flows beneath them. Shado stares into it. ]

SHADO:  (barely a whisper) ...No.

LUNA:  That is the difference between good and evil, Shado. Not power. Not strength. It's whether someone sees you as a person — or a weapon.

[ SHADO's hands tremble. Somewhere in the distance, dark thunder rolls — the Shadow Master, calling. ]

SHADO:  If I don't go back — he'll come HERE. He'll hurt all of you to get to me.

RIKU:  Then we'll face him. Together. All four of us.

KIRA:  You're not his soldier anymore, Shado. Unless you choose to be.

[ SHADO looks at his own hands — the silver glow shifting slowly, slowly... toward gold. ]

  ✦ PART 3: THE CHOICE 

[ The Brightwood. The Shadow Master descends from a storm cloud — massive, roaring, terrifying. ]

NARRATOR:  Evil had a face. And it was furious.

SHADOW MASTER:  (booming) SHADO. Come. Now. Or I will take this forest apart tree by tree.

SHADO:  (stepping forward — voice steady) ...No.

SHADOW MASTER:  What did you say to me?

SHADO:  I said NO. You never cared about me. You cared about what I could do FOR you.

RIKU:  (quietly, amazed) He's actually doing it.

LUNA:  His heart chose. I can feel it — it's shining.

KIRA:  (stepping beside Shado) He's not alone. That's the part you never count on, isn't it?

[ KIRA, LUNA, and RIKU take their places beside SHADO. Four lights against the storm. ]

SHADOW MASTER:  Four children cannot stop me!

SHADO:  We're not trying to destroy you. We're showing you something you don't understand.

KIRA:  This is what good looks like. It stands together. It doesn't leave anyone behind.

[ Light erupts from all four of them — not as a weapon, but as warmth. The Shadow Master recoils. ]

RIKU:  (eyes wide, grinning) ...Is it working?!

LUNA:  Light doesn't destroy darkness. It gives darkness a CHOICE.

[ The storm slowly dissolves. The Shadow Master... shrinks. Retreats. And is gone. ]

SHADO:  (quietly) Why did you trust me? You didn't have to.

KIRA:  Because Luna said your heart wasn't dark. And because everyone deserves one person who sees who they could be — not just who they've been.

RIKU:  Plus, you know... you're kind of cool when you're not trying to extinguish everything we love.

SHADO:  (small smile — the first one) ...Don't push it.

NARRATOR:  And in the Brightwood that night, four fireflies burned brighter than they ever had — one for each young heart that had chosen the harder, truer path: goodness.

READERS THEATER № 2

THE WEIGHT OF WHAT WE DO

  Theme 2: Justice and Retribution 

Four young apprentices discover that justice isn't about revenge — it's about truth, consequence, and the courage to do what's right even when it's hard.

  ⚖️ YUKI  —  A sharp, principled girl — the youngest judge's apprentice in history. Believes in fairness above all.

  πŸ”₯ KAI  —  A hot-headed boy with a strong sense of injustice — acts first, thinks second, but his heart is pure.

  🌸 MIRA  —  A thoughtful, gentle girl who sees all sides of every story — often the voice of reason.

  🌊 REN  —  A calm, perceptive boy who notices what others miss — observant and unexpectedly witty.

 

  ✦ PART 1: THE STOLEN HARVEST 

[ A village square. Autumn. The air smells of dry leaves. Bags of grain are piled near a wagon. ]

NARRATOR:  The village of Aokawa had worked all season to grow their harvest. Someone had stolen half of it overnight.

KAI:  (furious) I SAW who did it! It was Elder Haru's nephew — Tomo! I saw him loading the bags before dawn!

YUKI:  You SAW him, or you think it was him?

KAI:  What's the difference?! It was dark and he was carrying bags — who ELSE would be doing that?!

MIRA:  Lots of people, Kai. Farmers load grain before sunrise all the time.

REN:  (crouching, studying the ground) Here's a question — what SIZE are Tomo's boots?

KAI:  What does THAT have to do with—

REN:  These tracks. They're very small. Child-sized, actually.

[ Everyone looks at the ground. Small, narrow prints lead toward the forest. ]

YUKI:  Before we accuse anyone, we follow the evidence. That's the first law of justice.

KAI:  (crossing arms) Fine. But I still think it was Tomo.

MIRA:  (gently) Let's find out what's true, not just what feels right.

  ✦ PART 2: THE TRUTH IN THE TREES 

[ A small clearing in the forest. They find a rough camp — a girl, maybe eight years old, huddled next to several grain bags. ]

REN:  (quietly) Oh.

[ The girl scrambles up, terrified, clutching a small bag of grain. ]

KAI:  (immediately softening) Hey, hey — we're not going to hurt you.

MIRA:  (kneeling to her level) What's your name?

GIRL:  (trembling) ...Suki. I'm sorry. My little brother — he's sick. We haven't eaten in four days.

KAI:  (voice breaking) Four days?

YUKI:  (to the others, quietly) This is the hardest part of justice. She did take the grain. That's true. But the reason matters too.

KAI:  She was HUNGRY. She was trying to help her brother. That's not the same as being greedy!

MIRA:  But the farmers worked hard for that grain. They're suffering too — that's also true.

REN:  So what do we do? Punish her? Send her away?

YUKI:  Justice isn't just punishment. It's finding a way to make things right — for EVERYONE.

[ Silence. Then YUKI kneels beside Suki. ]

YUKI:  Suki, if we bring you and your brother to the village — if we tell the truth about what happened — will you come?

SUKI:  (scared) They'll be so angry.

KAI:  Maybe. But you'll have US standing beside you. And that counts for something.

  ✦ PART 3: THE JUDGMENT 

[ Village square again. The whole village has gathered. Suki stands in the center, frightened but upright. ]

NARRATOR:  Justice requires courage — from the person who must answer for their actions, and from those who must decide what's right.

YUKI:  (addressing the crowd) Suki took the grain. That's true. She also had a reason — her brother was starving. That's also true. Both things matter.

KAI:  And so do WE. Because we can decide what kind of village we are — one that only punishes, or one that asks why things happen and tries to fix what's broken.

MIRA:  Suki can work. She's strong and she's willing. What if she repaid the grain — a little at a time — while the village helps her and her brother get back on their feet?

REN:  That way justice is real — the farmers aren't left with nothing — but so is kindness.

FARMER:  (from the crowd, gruff but honest) ...The girl looked me in the eye and told the truth. That matters. I'll agree to the plan.

[ Murmurs from the crowd — then agreement, one by one. ]

KAI:  (exhaling) I almost accused the wrong person completely.

YUKI:  That's why we look before we leap, Kai.

KAI:  Yeah, yeah... (pause) But in my defense, I was very angry.

MIRA:  (laughing softly) You're ALWAYS very angry.

REN:  It's kind of your whole brand.

YUKI:  (smiling) What I know is this: justice feels simple from far away. Up close — it takes everyone, thinking carefully, together.

NARRATOR:  Suki worked hard all winter. By spring, the debt was repaid. And the village had gained something more valuable than grain: the understanding that justice and compassion aren't opposites — they need each other.

READERS THEATER № 3

THE BOY WHO WAS SOMETHING ELSE

  Theme 3: Transformation and Magic 

A tale of curses, courage, and the most powerful magic of all — choosing to see the person inside the shell.

 

CAST OF CHARACTERS

  🐸 HANA  —  A brave, kind girl who sees beauty where others see ugliness — endlessly curious about magic.

  ✨ ZERO  —  A boy who was transformed into a frog by a curse — sarcastic and proud, but deeply lonely.

  🌺 SORA  —  A warm, imaginative girl who believes all magic has a purpose — she's the group's dreamer.

  πŸ—‘️ TAO  —  A skeptical, practical boy who doesn't believe in magic — until he absolutely has to.

 

  ✦ PART 1: THE FROG WHO TALKED BACK 

[ A lily pond at the edge of a royal garden. Afternoon light shimmers. HANA and SORA peer into the water. ]

SORA:  Hana — I heard something.

HANA:  Probably just frogs.

ZERO:  (from the lily pad, loudly) PROBABLY? I am not 'just frogs,' thank you very much.

[ HANA and SORA freeze. TAO wanders in from behind them. ]

TAO:  ...Did that frog just talk?

ZERO:  Brilliant. The boy deduced that a talking frog is talking. Amazing detective work.

TAO:  Okay, rude.

HANA:  (crouching, delighted) You're — you're a person, aren't you? Under the curse?

ZERO:  (stiffly) I was. My name is Zero. I was — (pauses, proud) — I was once a prince, actually.

SORA:  A PRINCE! What happened?!

ZERO:  I said something unkind to a very powerful witch. I told her that her garden was ugly.

TAO:  ...You insulted a witch.

ZERO:  In hindsight, not my finest moment.

HANA:  How do you break the curse?

ZERO:  (going very still) Someone has to choose to see me — really SEE me — and call me by my true name. Not because they have to. Because they want to.

SORA:  That doesn't sound so hard.

ZERO:  (quietly) I've been here for three years. No one has even stopped to listen.

  ✦ PART 2: WHO ARE YOU REALLY 

[ Dusk. The four sit around the lily pond. Fireflies blink to life. ]

HANA:  Tell us about yourself. Not the curse — YOU.

ZERO:  Why? I'm a frog.

TAO:  You keep saying that like we're going to forget. We know you're a frog. We're asking anyway.

ZERO:  (long pause) ...I love stories. Before — I used to sneak into the royal library at night and read until morning. I thought stories were the closest thing to magic.

SORA:  (soft, delighted) That's exactly what I think.

ZERO:  I was afraid of heights. Which is embarrassing to admit as a prince. And I had a dog named Brick who was the most ridiculous creature alive — he was afraid of butterflies.

HANA:  (smiling) Brick.

ZERO:  He was enormous. A massive hound. Terrified of butterflies. Completely useless and absolutely perfect.

TAO:  (quietly) Do you miss him?

ZERO:  (voice very small) Every single day.

[ Silence. TAO, who has believed in nothing magical, stares at the frog — and for the first time, sees the boy. ]

TAO:  Zero... that's not really your true name, is it?

ZERO:  (startled) What?

TAO:  Zero means nothing. You're not nothing. What's the name they gave you — the one that meant something?

[ Zero goes completely still. The fireflies stop blinking. ]

ZERO:  (barely breathing) ...Ren. My name was Ren.

  ✦ PART 3: THE NAME THAT BREAKS CHAINS 

[ Moonrise. The pond glows silver. Something is shifting in the air — a kind of shimmer. ]

NARRATOR:  Magic is not only in spells and wands. It lives in the moments when we truly see another person.

HANA:  Ren. Can I call you that?

ZERO:  You — yes. You can.

SORA:  Ren. I'm glad we sat down and listened.

TAO:  (awkward, but genuine) I don't believe in magic. I want to be clear about that. But... Ren. You're the most real person I've met in a long time, and you're technically a frog, so I don't know what to do with that information.

[ ZERO begins to glow — softly at first, then brilliantly. The frog form shimmers and shifts. ]

ZERO:  (voice changing, becoming human and full) It's working. I can feel it.

HANA:  (eyes wide) What are we DOING?

SORA:  We're seeing him! We're really seeing him!

TAO:  I still don't believe in magic — (the light intensifies) — I am RECONSIDERING.

[ The light fades. A boy — tall, dark-haired, eyes silver — stands where the frog was. He looks at his own hands in disbelief. ]

REN:  (voice breaking with wonder) Three years. I thought... I thought no one would ever...

HANA:  We sat down. That's all.

REN:  No. You listened. That's everything.

TAO:  (uncomfortable with feelings) Right. Well. Good. Glad that worked out. (clears throat) I'm still not saying I believe in magic.

SORA:  (laughing) You literally just watched a frog become a prince.

TAO:  A very STRANGE coincidence.

REN:  (to all of them, quietly) Thank you. For the most powerful magic of all — someone took the time to ask who I was.

NARRATOR:  And somewhere in the royal garden, a large dog named Brick raced through the flowers, completely unafraid of butterflies for the very first time.

READERS THEATER № 4

BRAINS, BRAVERY, AND THE LABYRINTH OF RUIN

  Theme 4: Courage and Cleverness 

Being the strongest doesn't always mean winning. Four young heroes discover that real courage is knowing when to fight — and when to think.

 

CAST OF CHARACTERS

  🧠 NAMI  —  A clever, inventive girl — tiny, overlooked, and miles ahead of everyone. Plans before she acts.

  πŸ’ͺ GO  —  A loud, confident boy who relies on strength — learning to use his head as much as his fists.

  🌟 PIKA  —  An enthusiastic, optimistic girl — sometimes her ideas are wild, but her courage is real.

  🎭 JIN  —  A quiet, artistic boy — his creativity and lateral thinking always solve what strength cannot.

 

  ✦ PART 1: THE GATE OF IMPOSSIBLE 

[ An ancient labyrinth. Massive stone walls. A gateway sealed by three locks, each with a different puzzle carved above it. ]

NARRATOR:  The village healer had been taken inside the Labyrinth of Ruin. Four volunteers — chosen not by strength but by nerve — came to find her.

GO:  (cracking knuckles) Okay. Let's bust these locks open.

NAMI:  You cannot 'bust open' a puzzle lock, Go.

GO:  Watch me.

[ GO grabs the first lock and pulls with all his might. Nothing happens. ]

PIKA:  (helpfully) What if you pulled harder?

GO:  (straining) I AM—pulling—harder—!

JIN:  (studying the carvings quietly) These aren't locks. They're riddles.

NAMI:  (immediately interested) What do they say?

JIN:  The first one says: 'I have cities, but no houses. I have mountains, but no trees. I have water, but no fish. What am I?'

GO:  (letting go of lock, breathing hard) ...A really bad city?

PIKA:  A painting!

NAMI:  A MAP. Cities and mountains and water — it's a MAP.

[ NAMI presses the word 'MAP' in the stone tiles below. The first lock clicks open. ]

GO:  (impressed despite himself) ...Huh.

NAMI:  Wit, Go. Wit opens what muscle cannot.

  ✦ PART 2: DEEPER IN 

[ Inside the labyrinth. The path splits in five directions. Strange sounds echo from each tunnel. ]

GO:  (nervous, but hiding it) Okay. Five paths. We split up and—

NAMI:  No. We stay together. Splitting up is how people get lost forever in labyrinths. Every story, ever.

PIKA:  But how do we choose the right path?

JIN:  (pulling out a sketchbook) I've been drawing the turns we've taken. If the labyrinth is symmetrical — which old ones always are — the center should be... (draws) HERE. Which means we take the middle path, then curve left.

GO:  You've been DRAWING this whole time?

JIN:  Someone has to think. You were busy flexing at stone walls.

GO:  I — that's — I was ASSESSING the structural integrity—

NAMI:  (already walking) Middle path. Left curve. Let's go.

[ They follow Jin's map. The walls narrow. A mechanical guardian — gears and stone — blocks their way. ]

GO:  NOW can I punch something?

PIKA:  Look — it tracks movement! Every time we move, its eyes follow!

NAMI:  It's pressure-sensitive. It responds to fast movement.

PIKA:  So we move... slowly?

JIN:  Or we give it something else to track.

[ JIN tosses his sketchbook gently to the left. The guardian's eyes snap to it. The four walk slowly past on the right. ]

GO:  (on the other side, whispering) That was actually genius.

JIN:  (catching his sketchbook as it slides back to him) I know.

  ✦ PART 3: THE REAL COURAGE 

[ The center of the labyrinth. The healer, OLD MIRA, is trapped in a cage of crystallized thorns. ]

OLD MIRA:  (exhausted but alive) Children? They sent children?

PIKA:  They sent the BEST ones.

GO:  (studying the cage) The thorns react to pressure. I could break through, but it would collapse on her.

NAMI:  You're right. This needs a different kind of strength.

GO:  (surprised) ...You're agreeing with me?

NAMI:  You assessed it correctly. That's real thinking, Go. Not everything needs to be forced.

[ GO looks at the cage again — differently now. More carefully. ]

GO:  The crystals are growing FROM this central thorn. If we could dissolve that one—

JIN:  (pulling water flask from pack) Water? Crystals sometimes dissolve in—

PIKA:  Yes! WATER! I'll hold your hand, Old Mira, so you're not scared!

[ PIKA takes the old healer's hand through a gap. JIN pours water on the central thorn. It hisses and crumbles. The cage dissolves. ]

OLD MIRA:  (stepping free, awed) Four children. One got us in. One got us through. One thought us past the guardian. And one—

PIKA:  (beaming) I held your hand!

OLD MIRA:  And one made sure I was never alone. (quietly) That might be the bravest thing of all.

GO:  (to Nami, walking out) So... brains AND courage.

NAMI:  And kindness. Don't forget Pika.

GO:  And kindness. Apparently I need to add that to my training program.

JIN:  (smiling) You could start by not punching puzzles.

GO:  That was ONE TIME.

NARRATOR:  The village healer returned safely. And Go — for the first time in his life — spent an evening reading instead of training. It didn't come easily. But the best things rarely do.

READERS THEATER № 5

ROOTS AND BRANCHES

  Theme 5: Family Structures and Conflict 

Family is messy, complicated, and sometimes painful. But when two step-siblings learn to see each other clearly, they find something neither expected: an ally.

 

CAST OF CHARACTERS

  🌿 AYA  —  A resilient, determined girl raised by a cold stepparent — she holds her family together with quiet courage.

  🎸 KENTO  —  Aya's younger stepbrother — secretly envies her strength; learning to be honest about his feelings.

  🌻 HOSHI  —  A warm, empathetic girl from outside the family — she sees what the siblings cannot see about each other.

  🦁 DAIKI  —  A forthright, principled boy — he won't let hard truths go unsaid, even when it's uncomfortable.

 

  ✦ PART 1: SAME HOUSE, DIFFERENT WORLDS 

[ A school courtyard. AYA sits alone, doing homework. KENTO sits nearby — also alone, also doing homework. They pointedly ignore each other. ]

HOSHI:  (arriving, looking back and forth) ...You two are siblings, right?

AYA:  Step.

KENTO:  (at the same time) Step.

HOSHI:  Right. So why are you sitting six feet apart?

AYA:  Because we don't have to talk. We just have to live in the same house.

KENTO:  She said it, not me.

DAIKI:  (dropping his bag on the table between them) That's actually kind of sad, you know.

AYA:  Daiki, please stay out of it.

DAIKI:  I've been staying out of it for two months. You guys are both miserable. Something has to change.

KENTO:  (defensive) I'm not miserable.

HOSHI:  You eat lunch alone every single day, Kento.

KENTO:  I like eating alone.

HOSHI:  You keep looking over at Aya's table.

KENTO:  (pause) ...I'm not.

AYA:  (very quietly, not looking up) He does that?

  ✦ PART 2: WHAT WE DON'T SAY 

[ Later. Hoshi has arranged for Aya and Kento to sit together — with her and Daiki as reluctant mediators. ]

DAIKI:  Okay. Ground rules. No walking away. No eye-rolling — (looks at Kento) — especially you. And if someone says something true, even if it's hard to hear, we don't attack them for it.

KENTO:  (crossing arms) Fine.

AYA:  Fine.

HOSHI:  Kento — what actually bothers you about Aya?

KENTO:  (immediately) Everything she does is PERFECT. Every grade. Every chore. Even the way she folds laundry. It's like living with a robot.

AYA:  (startled) A... robot?

KENTO:  She never messes up. She never needs help. She never seems to FEEL anything. I don't even know how to talk to her because she's just — PERFECT.

AYA:  (slowly) He thinks I'm not... feeling anything.

DAIKI:  And is that true?

[ Long pause. AYA sets her pen down. ]

AYA:  I feel everything. I just — I've learned not to show it. Because in our house, if you show it... (stops)

KENTO:  (quietly) ...Stepmom uses it against you.

AYA:  (looking at him, surprised) You see that?

KENTO:  She does it to me too. That's why I go quiet.

[ A long, fragile silence. The wall between them shifts — just slightly. ]

HOSHI:  (softly) There it is.

[ After school. A park. Aya and Kento sit side by side, close enough now that they could talk — and do. ]

NARRATOR:  Sometimes we protect ourselves so well that we accidentally shut out the very people who understand us best.

KENTO:  I never actually thought you were a robot. I just didn't know how to say 'I feel like I can't measure up to you.'

AYA:  I never said you had to.

KENTO:  I know. But when someone's always — doing everything right — it makes you feel like nothing you do matters.

AYA:  Kento... I'm doing everything right because I'm terrified. Not because it's easy. I thought if I could just be good enough, quiet enough, small enough — Stepmom wouldn't—

KENTO:  (finishing her sentence) Wouldn't have a reason to be angry.

AYA:  Yeah.

KENTO:  (long pause) That's exhausting.

AYA:  (small, tired laugh) Yeah.

[ DAIKI and HOSHI appear on the path, giving them space but visible. ]

DAIKI:  (calling over) You two okay?

KENTO:  (calling back) Working on it!

HOSHI:  (calling back) That's all anyone can do!

AYA:  (to Kento) What do we do now? About home?

KENTO:  I don't know. But maybe... we figure it out together? Instead of separately?

AYA:  (considering) We'd have to actually talk.

KENTO:  I could try that.

HIDE:  (quietly) From any background. Does that mean...?

SOH:  It means they want someone good. Not just someone rich.

MOMO:  Then one of us should go.

HIDE:  Momo — the Academy is for nobles. Even if we PASS the test, they'd never actually—

MOMO:  That's the old way of thinking. Someone put up this notice. Someone changed the rules. We either trust that and try, or we stand here and definitely lose.

[ RISA approaches — clearly wealthy, clearly from the Academy. Awkward silence. ]

RISA:  (to Momo, genuinely) You're applying? I think that's wonderful.

SOH:  (suspicious) Why?

RISA:  Because the Academy is boring. Everyone thinks the same way. We need different.

MOMO:  (studying her) Are you being real right now?

RISA:  I'm trying to be. I don't always get it right, but I'm trying.

  ✦ PART 2: THE TEST 

[ The Royal Academy test hall. Gleaming. Intimidating. MOMO, HIDE, and SOH look tiny in it. RISA sits nearby. ]

NARRATOR:  The test was not what any of them expected. It had no questions about history or mathematics. It had one question: How do you solve a problem no one else has solved?

HIDE:  (whispering) What does that even mean?

SOH:  (already thinking) It means they want to see HOW we think. Not what we know.

MOMO:  Then we have an advantage. We've been solving impossible problems our whole lives.

RISA:  (from across the table) She's right. My tutors taught me answers. Your lives taught you something different.

[ The problem is revealed: a model village with a flood — they must design a solution with only what's in the room. ]

SOH:  (immediately) The clay on the desk. We can build a levee.

MOMO:  And the water needs somewhere to GO. We redirect it — HERE — to this lower corner, away from the homes.

RISA:  I can model the water flow — I studied fluid dynamics — I just never knew how to apply it to a REAL problem.

[ The four of them work together. The Academy judges watch, astonished. ]

JUDGE:  (quietly to another) They weren't supposed to collaborate.

OTHER JUDGE:  No rule said they couldn't.

  ✦ PART 3: WHAT WEALTH REALLY MEANS 

[ The results are posted. MOMO received the scholarship. HIDE and SOH received honorable distinction. RISA received something she didn't expect: a lesson. ]

MOMO:  (to Risa) Thank you. For working with us.

RISA:  I should be thanking you. I've been at the Academy for three years and today was the first day I felt like I actually solved something real.

HIDE:  You're going to be there next year. When we come in.

RISA:  And you're going to need someone who knows the building layout and where the cranky librarian hides the good books.

SOH:  (grinning) That's the most useful thing a rich person has ever offered me.

RISA:  (small laugh) I'm learning that's the best kind of useful.

MOMO:  (quietly, to Hide) Are you scared?

HIDE:  Terrified. You?

MOMO:  Also terrified. But I'm more scared of standing still.

HIDE:  Then we go scared.

SOH:  We go together.

RISA:  Agreed.

[ A village marketplace. Colorful stalls. KAZE watches a crowd gathering around VARN, who juggles and tells stories. ]

YUI:  (breathless) Did you SEE him? He's amazing! He knows stories from everywhere and his smile is like — like SUNLIGHT.

KAZE:  (flatly) Mm.

YUI:  That's all you have to say? MM?

KAZE:  He smiled at everyone. Exactly the same smile. Exactly the same warmth. Like it was... practiced.

YUI:  Maybe he's just friendly!

KAZE:  Maybe.

[ RYUU passes — large, scarred, scowling. People scatter from his path. He barely notices. ]

YUI:  (stepping back, nervous) Oh — that's Ryuu. Everyone says he's dangerous.

KAZE:  (watching him, curious) He stepped around that kitten. In the middle of his path. Without stopping.

YUI:  ...What?

KAZE:  A dangerous person doesn't reroute for a kitten. He did it automatically. Like it was just... what you do.

YUI:  Kaze, you see way too many things.

KAZE:  Or you see too few.

  ✦ PART 2: CRACKS IN THE SHINE 

[ Evening. VARN has befriended YUI entirely. KAZE watches from a distance. RYUU is nearby, fixing a cart wheel alone. ]

VARN:  (to Yui, all warmth) You're the most perceptive person I've met in this village. I feel like you truly understand me.

YUI:  (glowing) Really?

VARN:  The village merchant — the one with the red cart — you're close to her, yes? You know where she keeps her valuables?

[ A tiny pause. Yui doesn't notice it. KAZE — across the square — goes very still. ]

YUI:  (confused, but charmed) Well, she's my aunt, so yes—

VARN:  And the market festival — when the square is busiest and your aunt would be distracted—

KAZE:  (appearing, calm) Yui. Can I borrow you for a second?

VARN:  (smile flickering — just for a moment) Of course. Don't be long.

[ KAZE pulls YUI aside. Across the square, RYUU has been watching VARN too. Their eyes meet briefly. ]

KAZE:  (low, urgent) He's asking about your aunt's valuables and when she'll be distracted.

YUI:  (processing) He was just making conversation—

KAZE:  Was he? Think about every question he's asked you tonight.

[ YUI thinks. Her expression slowly changes. ]

YUI:  (slowly) ...He asked where she lives. When she closes up. Where she walks home.

KAZE:  Yes.

YUI:  (quietly) Oh no.

  ✦ PART 3: WHAT REALLY PROTECTS 

[ VARN is caught — not by officials, but by RYUU who simply stands in his path when he tries to leave, immovable as stone. ]

VARN:  (trying the smile) Hey, friend. Let me past.

RYUU:  (quietly) No.

VARN:  You're making a mistake. I'm just a traveler—

RYUU:  I saw your face when those two girls walked away. For half a second — you dropped it. The smile. And what was underneath... wasn't kind.

[ Officials are summoned. VARN is questioned. His saddlebags reveal stolen goods from three other villages. ]

YUI:  (shaken, watching) He seemed so wonderful.

KAZE:  He was designed to seem wonderful. That was the trick. Charm so bright you couldn't see around it.

YUI:  How do you tell? How do you KNOW?

KAZE:  You watch what people do when they think no one's looking. And you notice who they are toward people who can do nothing for them.

[ YUI looks at RYUU — standing quietly off to the side, checking on the aunt, who is shaken. ]

YUI:  (to Ryuu) ...Thank you. I never would have — I mean, I thought you were—

RYUU:  (simply) Scary. I know.

YUI:  (embarrassed) I'm sorry.

RYUU:  Don't be sorry. Learn from it. (pause) Though for what it's worth — the kitten's name is Mochi. She visits me every morning.

KAZE:  (small smile) I knew it.

NARRATOR:  Yui made two important choices after that night: she made a real friend she'd originally dismissed as frightening — and she taught herself to watch more carefully for what lies behind beautiful, practiced smiles.

MATSU:  (sitting down hard) I can't. I'm done. My feet — I think one of my shoes gave out.

SERA:  (not stopping) We can't stop here.

MATSU:  Sera — I am telling you my shoe GAVE OUT—

SERA:  Then we fix it and keep moving. We stop here, we freeze.

TSUBASA:  (cheerful despite everything) Hey — my pack has extra binding. We can wrap Matsu's shoe. It won't be perfect, but it'll hold for a day.

MATSU:  (accepting the help, grudgingly) ...Thanks.

ORI:  (looking at Sera) When did you last eat?

SERA:  (pause) Yesterday.

ORI:  Sera—

SERA:  I gave my portion to Tsubasa. He needed it more.

ORI:  (firmly) You can't carry any of us if you collapse. You need to accept your share.

SERA:  (quietly) I'm used to going without.

ORI:  I know. That's what worries me.

  ✦ PART 2: WHAT DARKNESS REVEALS 

[ Night. A small fire. They huddle around it. The stars are brilliant above them. ]

MATSU:  (staring at fire) Why do bad things happen to good people? We didn't DO anything wrong. We just—tried to help.

TSUBASA:  I think... hard things happen. Not TO us specifically. They just happen. And we're in them.

MATSU:  That's not comforting.

TSUBASA:  No. But it means it's not our fault.

ORI:  (quietly) I lost my family when I was very small. A flood. I used to think I must have done something wrong — because surely good things happen to good people and bad things happen to bad ones. And if bad things happened to me—

SERA:  (stopping, staring at the valley) I thought — there were so many moments last night when I thought—

ORI:  (beside her) But you kept going.

SERA:  WE kept going.

ORI:  Yes. That too.

MATSU:  (to Sera) You know you're allowed to need things. Right? You gave your food away and didn't say anything. You'd been awake longest. We wouldn't have minded helping you.

SERA:  (struggling with this) I'm not very good at... asking.

MATSU:  Neither am I. We can both be bad at it together and maybe get less bad over time.

TSUBASA:  (already walking down toward the village) You two are having a very meaningful conversation and I support it! But also there is HOT FOOD down there so!

ORI:  (laughing) Come. Let's go be warm.

NARRATOR:  They descended the mountain as the sun rose — sore, hungry, changed. They'd endured not because they were the strongest, but because they'd refused to leave anyone behind. Sometimes that's the whole difference.

NARRATOR:  They say the Golden Fish grants wishes. What they don't tell you is what each wish costs.

BARO:  (to the fish) One wish. That's all. I just want my family's fishing boat back — the one we had to sell.

GOLDEN FISH:  (ancient, calm voice) So be it.

[ The boat appears. BARO stares at it — wonderful. Then, very quickly, his eyes slide to the fish again. ]

NIKO:  (arriving, eyes widening) Baro — is that—?

BARO:  The fishing boat. And — I was thinking — maybe one more wish. A bigger one. A house with a second floor.

NIKO:  You said one wish!

BARO:  That was before I knew it actually worked.

TOBI:  (bluntly) This is going to go badly.

CHISA:  Baro, what you have right now is what you needed. Can you feel that?

BARO:  (not listening) (to the fish) One more. Just one more.

[ The fish grants it. The house appears. And BARO looks at the fish again. ]

  ✦ PART 2: THE COST 

[ Days later. BARO has wished for wealth, status, power. He now sits in a grand house — alone. ]

NIKO:  (standing at the door) We came to check on you.

BARO:  (hollow) Oh. Is the fish still there?

TOBI:  That's the first thing you ask?

BARO:  I was thinking — if I wished for control of the whole harbor— not for greed, just to make sure things run properly—

CHISA:  (gently) Baro. When did you last laugh?

BARO:  (confused) What?

CHISA:  When did you last have dinner with us? Come to the beach? Watch the sun go down?

BARO:  (trying to remember) I've been... busy. Planning.

NIKO:  Planning what?

BARO:  The next... the next thing. There's always a next thing.

TOBI:  (quietly, for once) Baro. You're miserable. In the nicest house on the island.

BARO:  (angry) I'm not miserable! I have everything!

NIKO:  You don't have US. And I don't think you've noticed.

[ Silence. BARO looks around his grand, empty house. Something shifts in his face. ]

  ✦ PART 3: THE REAL WISH 

[ The pier. The Golden Fish glows in the water. BARO stands before it one last time. ]

NARRATOR:  Greed isn't always about things. Sometimes it's about the inability to feel that what you have is enough. That's the hardest emptiness to fill.

NIKO:  What are you going to do?

BARO:  (staring at the water) I've been trying to figure out what I actually want. I had the boat — that was real. That was what we needed. Everything after that was just... fear. What if we lose it again? What if it's not enough? What if—

CHISA:  The 'what if' never stops. Not for people who are afraid of losing.

BARO:  (to the fish) I want to undo it. Everything after the boat. Take the house. Take the wealth. Take all of it back.

GOLDEN FISH:  That is the rarest wish of all. Are you certain?

BARO:  Yes. (pause) Actually — can I add one thing?

TOBI:  (alarmed) BARO—

BARO:  I want to keep the memory. I want to remember what it felt like — the wanting that was never satisfied. So I don't forget.

GOLDEN FISH:  (after a long pause) ...Wise. So be it.

[ The grand house dissolves. The wealth disperses like sea foam. The modest boat remains. ]

TOBI:  (breathless) You gave it all back.

BARO:  All of it except the lesson.

CHISA:  (warmly) Come to dinner tonight? Niko's making her famous soup.

BARO:  (smiling — for the first time in weeks) Yeah. I'd really like that.

NARRATOR:  It was, he would later say, the best soup he had ever tasted. Not because Niko had changed the recipe — but because Baro had finally learned how to be present for the meal.

  🌊 SHIN  —  A rule-following boy who believes rules exist for good reasons — slowly learning which rules are wisdom and which are fear.

  ⚡ MIA  —  An adventurous girl who leaps before she looks — funny, brave, and starting to add a little more looking.

  πŸ¦‹ KOTA  —  A thoughtful, careful boy who listens to everyone — and is learning that listening includes listening to himself.

 

  ✦ PART 1: THE RULE 

[ A village edge. A stone door, ancient and vine-covered, set into the hillside. A carved sign says: DO NOT OPEN. ]

MIA:  (immediately) We should open it.

SHIN:  (immediately) We should absolutely not open it.

HARU:  Who put it there? When? Why does it say that?

KOTA:  My grandmother says the rule is older than the village. She says she doesn't know why either — just that we don't open it.

MIA:  A rule nobody can explain is basically not a rule.

SHIN:  A rule nobody can explain might exist because what's behind it is too dangerous to EXPLAIN.

HARU:  Both of those could be true. The question is — which one is it HERE?

MIA:  So we open it and find out.

SHIN:  So we leave it alone and stay safe.

KOTA:  Or... we find out more before we decide?

HARU:  (nodding slowly) That. That's the third option everyone keeps missing.

[ They all look at the door. It doesn't move. But somehow it feels like it's waiting. ]

  ✦ PART 2: THE WISDOM BEHIND THE RULE 

[ The village elder's house. The four sit in front of ancient GRANDMOTHER YASU, who is very old and very sharp. ]

HARU:  Grandmother Yasu — the stone door. Why does it say not to open it?

GRANDMOTHER YASU:  (studying them) Most children just ask if they can open it.

SHIN:  We want to understand the reason.

GRANDMOTHER YASU:  (surprised and pleased) Then you are already wiser than most adults.

MIA:  So — why?

GRANDMOTHER YASU:  Long ago, that door led to a cave where a fire spirit slept. If woken carelessly, it would flood the valley with flame. A young girl went in without understanding — and almost destroyed the village.

KOTA:  Almost?

GRANDMOTHER YASU:  She was brave AND clever. She brought water. She apologized to the spirit, which — (she smiles) — almost no one thinks to do. And she asked: what do you need?

HARU:  The spirit had a need?

GRANDMOTHER YASU:  It was lonely. And misunderstood. And extremely dramatic, apparently. She spent three days talking with it, and it agreed to sleep quietly — if one person came each year to say: we know you're there, and we're not afraid of you.

SHIN:  (slowly) And if no one comes—

GRANDMOTHER YASU:  The spirit wakes. Angry. It's been seven years since anyone visited.

[ Long, long silence. Everyone looks at each other. ]

MIA:  Ohhhhhh.

SHIN:  The rule wasn't just 'don't open it.' It was missing a second part.

GRANDMOTHER YASU:  The part that was forgotten. Yes.

  ✦ PART 3: THE RIGHT WAY TO OPEN A DOOR 

[ The stone door. All four stand before it — prepared, this time, with water, lanterns, and understanding. ]

NARRATOR:  There is a difference between blind disobedience and informed courage. And there is a difference between blind obedience and genuine wisdom. The best path usually runs between the two.

SHIN:  I still think this is terrifying.

MIA:  Yes, but now it's terrifying with a PLAN.

KOTA:  We know what we're walking into. We know what the spirit needs. We're ready.

HARU:  (hand on the door) The rule said don't open it. But the rule was protecting something it never explained. If we'd just obeyed, the spirit would have woken angry. If we'd just burst in out of curiosity, same thing.

SHIN:  We had to understand before we could act.

HARU:  Exactly.

[ HARU opens the door. Inside: warmth. A deep orange glow. And a very large, very sleepy fire spirit who opens one enormous eye. ]

FIRE SPIRIT:  (rumbling, ancient) ...Oh. Young ones. It has been... a long time.

MIA:  (bowing, somehow finding manners) Hello! We know you're there. And we're not afraid of you!

FIRE SPIRIT:  (a sound like a fireplace crackling — it might be laughter) Are you certain? You're trembling.

SHIN:  (trembling visibly) That's just — that's how I walk.

KOTA:  We came to listen. And to ask — what do you need?

[ The fire spirit is very quiet for a very long time. ]

FIRE SPIRIT:  (softly) No one has asked me that in a hundred years.

HARU:  We're asking now.

NARRATOR:  They spent three hours with the fire spirit that afternoon. It told them stories older than the village. They brought water, as the old girl had. And when they left, the spirit curled back into contented sleep — promising quiet for another generation. Outside, Shin carefully rewrote the sign on the door:

SHIN:  (reading what he carved) 'DO NOT OPEN — unless you first understand why, and come prepared to listen.'

MIA:  Perfect.

KOTA:  I think this is what wisdom looks like. Not just rules. Rules WITH reasons.

HARU:  And the courage to ask — even when the answer is behind a very scary door.

NARRATOR:  And that was the year the village remembered the second half of its oldest rule — and taught it to every child who came after, so no one would ever have to choose blindly between obedience and curiosity again.
