5 ESSENTIAL steps for a creating a super successful STAAR Writing Workshop in your district, school, and classroom.
Step 1: Unpack and explain the assessment rules in a FUN and engaging way "STARR Writing Rubrics made fun, if that is possible"! Show student samples/anchor papers and explicitly/directly connect students' writing with the STARR scoring guides!
Step 2: Make writing a blast, Everyone is a writer when inspired! Nothing kills the love of writing like mind numbing test prep. THINK OUTSIDE OF THE BOX! Big Ideas! Example 1: One, Two or Three full days every semester should be dedicated to creating a writing/writers convention (THINK Comic-Con). Example 2: Create an à la carte writing seminar day where students get to choose their writing PD! Example 3: Your ideas...
Step 3: Create a school that values, teaches and promotes academic listening and oracy first and foremost! Oracy the ability to express oneself fluently and grammatically in speech at a high level.
Step 4: Create student friendly writing memory aids: mnemonic songs/chants, checklists, charts, checklist, rubrics, and yes student inspired ideas. Lots of daily "bad/ineffective" writing practice when students can't remember key writing structures is useless! Perfect practice makes perfect!
Step 5: Create a judgment free writing zone in your classroom everyday all day! Let students write, revise, edit and publish written work with peers, teachers, and friends with a great abundance of encouragement and zero fear of judgment.

Rubrics
TEA scores TAKS compositions on a four-point scale, with one being the lowest score and four being the highest. We base the rubric on five criteria—focus and coherence, organization, development of ideas, voice, and conventions. We consider each of the criteria equally in the scoring of each composition. We use the same writing rubric will to evaluate TAKS compositions at all grades assessed: Grade 4 English, Grade 4 Spanish, Grade 7, Grade 10, and Grade 11 Exit Level. In all cases, the testing contractor trains scorers to consider the criteria listed in the rubric in a way that is grade-level appropriate.
