Are We Warehousing Special Education Students?

Are public schools systems giving our special-needs students an unexceptional or ineffective education?
  • What are the real outcomes of full inclusion vs. pull-out?
  • What is the outcome of placing the neediest students with the greenest teachers?
  • What are the real cost to students that are undereducated or uneducated?
How do we teach and support our special education students in a broken system. Today, many of our special needs students are stuck in a revolving door feckless pull-out "not so special education" program. The primary goal for many schools is meeting minutes on an IEP, keeping in compliance with IDEA regulations and less about maximizing a students's learning potential. The sad thing is not much has changed since I was in a spacial education pull out program. Today many special education programs are hobled with long term subs, the greenest teachers, emergency certified teachers, giant case loads, and the weakened Individuals With Disabilities Education Act (IDEA) protections for our neediest students? The ideals of an inclusive quality educational environment are lost in schools that warehouse kids. Doing the absolute minimum to stay in compliance. We are giving kids broken ladders and a poor chance to thrive! Students in these broken systems will never reach their dreams or fulfill their maximum potential. Sean Taylor M.Ed The Reading Sage

In the 2004 reauthorization of the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA), the requirement for specific objectives was removed from the mandated requirements. As a result, it is now even more critical to write clear and concise goals for students with disabilities. By doing so, educators can ensure that their students receive the appropriate support and services to help them make meaningful progress toward their educational goals. Clear goals also provide a basis for measuring a student's progress, evaluating the effectiveness of instructional strategies, and making data-driven decisions to support student learning. Therefore, it is essential for educators to develop well-defined goals that are aligned with student needs, are measurable, and are relevant to the student's educational program.
