Instead, the master schedule dropped his pull-out squarely in the middle of my block. Every day, Oscar left my room partway through, went and got thirty minutes of instruction elsewhere, and came back. On paper, he was receiving more support than any other child in the room. In practice, the transition out destroyed the second half of my ninety minutes for him, and the transition back destroyed the effectiveness of his thirty minutes there — he arrived at both places having just been pulled out of the other one, present for neither. Two real interventions, stitched together by a scheduling decision, added up to functionally none. I asked, more than once, whether his pull-out could move to a time that didn't gut both blocks. I was told the schedule was the schedule. That was a hill I was willing to die on, and I did not win it.

Here's what I did instead, inside the constraint I couldn't remove: since Oscar wasn't getting his decoding practice from me, I made sure that whenever he was in my room, he was immersed in real listening comprehension — genuinely excellent books, read aloud, finger tracking the print even though the decoding wasn't there yet. That's Rule 21: you cannot practice your way out of a reading deficit by doing less reading. And Rule 22, right behind it: massive exposure beats occasional exposure, every time, and it isn't close.

Fidelity to the Child, Not Fidelity to the Schedule

Oscar's story is the clearest example I have, but it's not an isolated one. That's Rule 25 made concrete: a word, a song, a skill is not learned because it was presented once, and there's no way to compress that first exposure to mastery — only to make the miles along the way enjoyable enough that a class is willing to put them in, and to notice when the capacity you're actually building is bigger than the one song in front of you.

My classroom itself was built to make that same argument without a single word from me. It looked like an atelier — a master's workshop — walls covered in oil portraits and paintings, some impressionistic, some realistic, all vibrant enough that a visitor sometimes said they looked like they belonged in a gallery in the Louvre or the Musée d'Orsay in Paris. Visitors regularly asked me if I was the art teacher, because the room was so full of paintings, sculpture, architectural models, artist-grade materials — it read more like a hobby shop or a well-stocked game store than a fourth-grade classroom.

None of that was decoration. A room set up this way turns the walls into curriculum. Sanctuary made the room safe. Structure protected the time inside it. Dosage is the argument that even a safe, structured room fails a child if the actual volume of practice never reaches the level required to change anything — and that volume is not negotiable, no matter how good the method delivering it is. Oscar's decoding never got the dose it needed from me, because the schedule made sure of it. But his listening comprehension did, because I refused to let the same excuse touch the one thing I could still control. That distinction — between decoding and comprehension, and between what a child can access by ear versus by eye — is exactly where Chapter 4 picks up.
