Sean Taylor
Sean has been painting since 1989. As a dyslexic child, he struggled with traditional schoolwork but discovered a gift for drawing and painting — a gift that eventually helped fund graduate studies in Uppsala, Sweden.
Between 1998 and 2001 he traveled through 27 countries across Europe, working almost entirely in pen-and-ink and watercolor because the materials were light enough to carry in a single bag. Before Sweden, he spent nearly six years as an artist-in-residence, teaching art to elementary students during their school-year intercessions.
When his formal teaching career began in 2000, he made a habit of painting alongside his students every time — living proof that even natural ability has to be practiced and studied, not just possessed. Sean is also the founder of The Reading Sage, an education blog read by up to two million visitors a year around the world. When he isn't teaching, he takes on a small number of fine-art charcoal portrait commissions each year.

Pre-mixed paint could finally be sealed, carried, and kept fresh for weeks. Painters left the studio behind and painted directly from life, outdoors, in changing light — what the French called painting en plein air. Renoir put it plainly: without paint in tubes, there would have been no Monet, no Cézanne, no Impressionism at all.
A discipline, not an experiment

The Letter
Her name, for this piece, is Marisol. She was nine when she sat in my fourth-grade classroom, and she told me once, years later, that before that year she despised school. Not disliked. Despised. Something had already been decided about her, and about what school was for, before she'd had the chance to decide anything for herself.
What changed it wasn't a curriculum. It was Odyssey of the Mind — a team, a problem to solve, a reason to stay after the bell rang. It was someone staying late with her until her mother got off work, not because a schedule required it, but because it mattered that she wasn't alone. She went on to chase aerospace engineering. She wrote to tell me, a decade later, that she'd never forgotten the year someone trusted her before she'd proven anything.
I've kept that letter through every year that got harder to keep going. I pull it out when the job stops feeling like teaching and starts feeling like something else — compliance, maybe, or inventory. It reminds me what the job actually was, underneath everything we built on top of it.
And what we built on top of it has a name. Two names, actually: No Child Left Behind, and its sequel, Race to the Top.
The Irony in the Name
No Child Left Behind was, by the arithmetic of its own title, a promise about people. In practice it became a promise about scores — and the two are not the same promise, however much the architects of the law wanted us to believe they collapsed into one. A child can be perfectly present on a spreadsheet and completely absent from the room. A child can hit every proficiency band and still walk into a building each morning feeling like nobody there would notice if they didn't.
The law's failure wasn't that it aimed too high. It's that it aimed at the wrong referent. It asked, is the number moving? It never once asked, does the child feel trusted? And when accountability regimes have to choose between a value they can measure and a value they can't, they always — always — measure the one they can. Not from malice. From architecture. That's simply what a system built entirely around instruments will do: it will optimize for what the instrument can register, and it will treat everything the instrument can't register as if it doesn't exist.
Belonging doesn't show up on a dashboard. Trust has no proficiency band. Meaning isn't a subscore. So under the regime that followed — first NCLB, then Race to the Top's competitive scramble for federal dollars tied to test performance — these things weren't attacked. They were simply never counted, and what isn't counted in a system obsessed with counting eventually stops being tended.
The Word "Account"
There's something worth sitting with in the word accountability itself. Its root is account — to give an account of, to tell, to render into language something that happened. An account, originally, was a story you told someone who trusted you enough to ask.
Somewhere in the last quarter-century, we hollowed that word out and refilled it with arithmetic. "Accountability" stopped meaning tell me what happened to this child and started meaning show me the number. We kept the word and discarded the narrative it was built to hold. A teacher used to be accountable to a child, a family, a community — a relationship with obligations that ran in more than one direction. Now a teacher is accountable for a metric, a relationship that runs only one way, toward an office that never meets the child at all.
This is the move Martin Buber warned about a century ago, in different language: the collapse of I-Thou into I-It. An I-Thou relationship meets a person as a whole, irreducible presence — the way I met Marisol, not as a proficiency band but as a nine-year-old deciding, in real time, whether the world was safe enough to try in. An I-It relationship meets a person as an instance of a category, a data point to be processed, optimized, and reported upward. NCLB and Race to the Top didn't invent I-It thinking in schools. But they built the pipes, the funding formulas, and the professional incentives that let I-It thinking flow through every layer of the system, from the state department down to the exit ticket on a nine-year-old's desk.
What a Whole-Child Model Actually Costs — and Buys
I've spent time in Swedish classrooms, watching a different premise operate: the individuell utvecklingsplan, an individual development plan built long before there's any grade to argue about. It tracks a child academically, yes, but also socially, emotionally, and in terms of the executive-function scaffolding a child needs to eventually direct their own learning. No child is reduced to a single axis, because no single axis was ever asked to carry the whole weight of what a "successful child" means.
That model costs something. It costs time, trust in teacher judgment, and a willingness to tolerate ambiguity that a spreadsheet-driven system can't stand. But it buys something no test score has ever bought: a child who believes the adults around them are actually looking at them, not through them toward a number.
This is the same instinct behind the classical Trivium — grammar, logic, rhetoric — as I've come to understand and teach it. It isn't a content sequence. It's a shield for the mind, a discipline that assumes the learner is a reasoning, speaking, meaning-making person from the start, not a vessel waiting to be filled and later tested for fullness. Oracy — the ability to think out loud, to be heard, to argue and be argued with — has to come before literacy in any real sense, because a child who has never been trusted to speak will not trust the page either. You cannot standardize your way into that kind of trust. You can only build it, in a room, over time, the way it got built for Marisol.
What Was Actually Left Behind
Raise the bar. Close the gap. Race to the top. Every one of these initiatives borrowed the language of ascent — as if education were a single vertical axis, and children merely at different altitudes on it. But a child is not an altitude. A child is a whole terrain, and the initiatives that promised to leave no one behind ended up doing exactly that to everything a ruler can't measure: belonging, trust, the sense of mattering to someone before you've achieved anything at all.
What we left behind was the relationship. What we kept was the account — in the new, hollow sense of that word. The tragedy isn't that we tried to raise standards. It's that we let the instrument define the goal, until an entire profession started mistaking the measurement for the mission.
Marisol didn't write to thank me for her test scores. She wrote to thank me for staying after school. That's the account that was actually worth keeping.

Beyond the Data Dashboard: Why We Need a Child-Centered Educational Restoration, Not Another Top-Down Reform
In American education, we are currently navigating an institutional bankruptcy of the spirit. To understand why our schools feel increasingly hollow, we must apply a mental model favored by the late Charlie Munger: Inversion. Instead of asking the standard bureaucratic question—"How do we reform schools to raise the numbers?"—we must ask the inverse: "What did we do to make school a place that increasing numbers of teachers, parents, and children want to escape?"
This question reveals the "Four Exits," a mass exodus across the entire educational landscape:
Teachers are exiting to reclaim lost professional agency.
Families are fleeing toward homeschooling and microschools (with homeschooling rates jumping from 3.7% to 5.2%).
Students are withdrawing, evidenced by a staggering national chronic absenteeism rate of 31%.
Communities are withdrawing their collective investment in the institutional legitimacy of the neighborhood school.
While absenteeism is undeniably multi-causal—driven by the complexities of poverty, housing instability, and health—the management system has rendered the institution less resilient to these external pressures. When millions of children are technically enrolled but the system struggles to secure their regular presence, we are not looking at an implementation problem. We are looking at a system that people no longer believe is worth their time.
This article and podcast argue that American education is facing an institutional legitimacy crisis characterized by the widespread departure of teachers, families, and students from traditional schooling. Rather than viewing issues like chronic absenteeism and teacher burnout as isolated problems, the author frames them as symptoms of a managerial system that prioritizes data and accountability over human agency and creativity. In Munger’s terms, this is a classic Incentive Super-Response Tendency: the system is simply optimizing for what it is rewarded for.

When the measurement system becomes the educational system, the core qualities of human development—curiosity, wonder, beauty, and awe—are treated as irrelevant because they cannot be spreadsheeted. A quarterly improvement plan cannot capture the moment a child becomes obsessed with physics through the flight of a paper plane. By replacing inviting environments with relentless test-prep cycles, the system reproduces the very disengagement it claims to cure. We have forgotten to ask: "What would make this child genuinely reluctant to miss tomorrow?"
2. The "One Hundred Languages": The Atelier as a Cognitive Laboratory
The Reggio Emilia approach recognizes the "one hundred languages," the belief that children possess a vast repertoire of symbolic ways to explore and express reality. This includes visual arts, structural design, physical phenomena (light and shadow), and narrative performance.
Crucially, the atelier (studio) is not a "craft room"; it is a laboratory for research. Its primary function is Translation. It allows a child to "bridge" languages—translating a scientific observation of a schoolyard plant into a charcoal sketch, then into a wire sculpture, and finally into a written defense of its ecological impact.
In our standardized system, we have narrowed this to a single language: the pencil and the screen. By demanding one "correct" answer on a multiple-choice grid, we render a child’s deeper cognitive processes invisible. We aren't just testing them; we are silencing the ninety-nine other ways they could show us what they know.
3. Reversing the Hierarchy: The "Spark" vs. The Pacing Guide
True learning requires a reversal of the traditional hierarchy. In the atelier model, projects do not begin with top-down pacing guides; they begin with "The Spark"—the child’s natural curiosity.
A master practitioner understands that a child staring out the window during a lecture isn't necessarily "off-task." They may be engaging in the highest form of inquiry, observing the trajectory of light or the movement of a shadow—the seeds of an obsession with the solar system.
In this model, the teacher is not a "human interface" for a centralized digital platform. They operate within their Circle of Competence as a curriculum architect, co-designing inquiries alongside students. Professional agency for teachers is the prerequisite for student engagement; you cannot have a living laboratory if the architect of that lab is forced to follow a script.
4. The "Third Teacher": The Classroom as a Provocation
We must abandon classrooms designed for "supervision and delivery." In the Reggio Emilia tradition, the environment is the "third teacher." Most schools ask, How efficiently can we deliver instruction? The atelier asks, What can this environment provoke?
A restored classroom is filled with material reality:
Unfinished sculptures and mathematical models.
Gears, light projections, and architectural drawings.
Clay, wire, and natural objects awaiting investigation.
The environment should scream: "Human beings make things here." As information becomes more digitized, the school of the future must provide what the internet cannot: material reality and shared creation. We must ask: "What can a child do here that they could not do sitting alone in front of a screen?"
5. Leonardo’s World: The End of Administrative Subject Blocks
Modern school subjects—Math at 9:00, Science at 11:00—are administrative conveniences, not pedagogical necessities. They fracture a reality that is naturally unified.
Architecture is geometry. Painting is chemistry (the mixing of pigments). Sculpture is engineering. We should stop trying to "add" art to STEM and instead ask why it was removed in the first place. This fracture exists because it is easier for a bureaucracy to schedule blocks than to facilitate a "Renaissance workshop" where knowledge is acquired because it is needed to bring a creative design to life.
"The Renaissance workshop did not need to invent ‘STEM.’ It was already doing something more integrated. An apprentice learning to paint encountered questions of light, durability of materials, and the physics of the human body all at once."
6. Oracy: The Missing Half of Literacy
The accountability movement's obsession with silent testing has nearly eliminated oracy—the "civilization skills" of explaining an idea, defending an argument, and listening deeply.
A democracy of silent test-takers is poor preparation for citizenship. Oracy is best developed through the production of a play or a public exhibition. When students produce theater, they must interpret complex language, calculate scenery dimensions, and collaborate under pressure. The outcome is a live performance—a beautiful, tangible exhibition of learning that does not vanish when a testing window closes.
Conclusion: Restoration Over Reform
The era of "Education Reform"—of top-down legislation and more dashboards—has reached a dead end. We do not need a new version of the same machine; we need an Educational Restoration.
Reform asks: "What should the system do differently?" Restoration asks: "What have we lost that needs to be brought back?"
Restoration begins with the experience of the child in the room. It shifts the focus from "School as a Management System" to "School as Human Development." In a restored system, data is used as evidence (the speedometer), but it is never the engine.
The ultimate metric of our success is not a decimal-point increase on a dashboard. It is the answer to three visceral questions:
Would the teachers choose to work here if they had other options?
Would the parents choose to send their children here if they had other options?
Would the children choose to come here if they had other options?
When we finally trust the people in the classroom and provide environments rich enough to provoke wonder, we will no longer need to manage the "speedometer." The children will already be there, reluctant to miss a single day.
The 'atelier' model transforms the classroom from a passive space designed for instruction delivery into a Reggio Emilia-inspired "third teacher" that actively provokes curiosity, creation, and collaboration.
Here is how this model fundamentally reorganizes the classroom environment:
1. From "Supervision and Delivery" to "Provocation"
Traditional classrooms are structurally optimized for supervision, traffic flow, and efficient instruction delivery, utilizing rows or clusters, whiteboards, and clear teacher sightlines. The atelier model, by contrast, physicalizes a completely different question: "What can this environment provoke?" It redesigns the space so that every room answers:
What is being made here?
What questions are being investigated?
What evidence of human creativity is visible?
2. A Physical Landscape of "Material Reality"
Instead of sterile walls or digital screens, an atelier classroom is defined by physical materials and visible works-in-progress. A student entering the room immediately encounters tangible artifacts:
Unfinished sculptures, architectural drawings, and watercolors
Mathematical models, gears, tools, and geometry constructions
Microscopes, plants, clay, wood, and student-built machines
This physical setup sends an immediate, powerful message: "Human beings make things here". In an age of abundant digital information, this environment provides what a screen cannot: community, mentorship, material reality, and shared, embodied creation.
3. Integrated, Renaissance-Style Discovery
Instead of dividing the day into administrative, isolated time slots (e.g., Math at 9:00, Science at 11:00), the atelier model functions like a Renaissance workshop where disciplines naturally merge. Students experience first-hand that architecture is geometry, painting is chemistry, music is mathematics, and sculpture is engineering. Skills are learned and applied in concert to build something real—such as designing scenery, calculating dimensions, and understanding history to produce a play.
4. Structuring Space for "Oracy" and Public Exhibitions
The atelier environment is physically and culturally organized to foster oracy (speaking and listening) as a fundamental outcome rather than a secondary "soft skill". The space is arranged to support active democratic conversation, including:
Harkness-style discussions, Socratic seminars, and collaborative design critiques
Theater, storytelling, and public debates
Exhibitions of learning, where paper-and-pencil testing events are replaced by science fairs, architectural showcases, portfolios, and community presentations.
5. Reversing the Classroom Hierarchy
The atelier model turns the classroom into a "living laboratory" where the teacher is a "master practitioner" (a designer, mentor, and curriculum architect) rather than a mere interface implementing a centralized platform. It fundamentally reverses the traditional educational sequence:
Atelier (Restorative) Model: Child \(\rightarrow\) teacher observation \(\rightarrow\) meaningful work \(\rightarrow\) evidence of learning \(\rightarrow\) targeted assessment \(\rightarrow\) adjustment.
Standards and testing do not disappear, but they are put in their proper place: they serve as the instruments on the dashboard to guide the journey, rather than the purpose of the drive.
The Reggio Emilia atelier model represents a view of learning that is fundamentally incompatible with the mechanics of the modern testing and accountability movement. When a school system shifts its focus entirely toward standardized metrics, the very elements that make the atelier the "creative heart" of education are the first to be compromised and ultimately lost.
Here is why this approach is the core of education, and why it cannot survive under a purely managerial, test-driven paradigm:
1. The Dashboard Fallacy vs. Unquantifiable Human Wonder
The testing movement operates on a basic managerial assumption: if you can measure learning precisely and hold people accountable to targets, outcomes will improve. This turns the measurement system into the educational system itself.
The fatal flaw of this approach is that the core qualities of the atelier—curiosity, wonder, beauty, and awe—cannot be spreadsheeted or benchmarked. A quarterly improvement plan cannot easily capture the moment a child develops an obsession with architecture through sculpture, or finds their voice through theater. Because these highly cognitive, creative processes of discovery are difficult to quantify, they are treated as invisible or irrelevant by a system obsessed with data.
2. The Narrowing of "Evidence of Learning"
In an atelier, children express their thinking through the "one hundred languages"—translating thoughts between drawing, building, clay, light, and shadow. Learning is a multi-dimensional, integrated process where science, mathematics, engineering, and art are deeply unified.
The accountability movement, by contrast, drastically narrows what counts as evidence of learning. It prioritizes paper-and-pencil or screen-based testing events where there is only one "correct" answer. In doing so, it eliminates:
Oracy and Dialogue: The "civilization skills" of explaining an idea, defending an argument, listening deeply, and participating in democratic conversation.
Integrated Knowledge: The "Leonardo's world" experience where math is something you build with and science is something you do. Under rigid accountability, knowledge is fractured into isolated, administratively convenient subject blocks to meet pacing guides.
3. The Destruction of Agency and the "Master Practitioner"
At its core, the atelier model relies on a reversed hierarchy. The child's natural interests and questions drive the learning; the teacher acts as a "master practitioner," observing the child to design meaningful, hands-on work and open-ended inquiries.
Under a rigid testing regime, this professional ownership is stripped away. Teachers find themselves micromanaged by pacing guides, benchmark assessments, walkthroughs, and compliance documentation. Instead of curriculum architects, they are forced to become human interfaces implementing centralized platform instructions. When teachers lose their professional agency, the classroom ceases to be a "living laboratory" and instead becomes an instructional delivery mechanism.
4. Pleasing the Speedometer
Under intense testing pressure, institutions optimize for what they are rewarded for. If a school's legitimacy is judged entirely by a dashboard, the school will manage to the dashboard.
This creates a system that "drives the car for the purpose of pleasing the speedometer". Assessments are no longer used to help a teacher adjust instruction for a child's needs; they are administered simply because "someone, somewhere, likes another spreadsheet". In the rush to raise numbers, the system forgets to ask the most fundamental question: "What would make this child genuinely reluctant to miss tomorrow?". By replacing an inviting, material-rich environment with relentless interventions and test prep, the system accidentally reproduces the very disengagement it claims to be trying to cure
When we look at how an atelier project unfolds, we see that it does not begin with a pre-planned lesson plan or a standardized curriculum unit. Instead, it reverses the traditional hierarchy. It begins with the child’s natural interests, questions, and everyday observations, which teachers closely observe and document to co-design deep, multi-disciplinary inquiries.
Based on this restorative framework, here are three concrete examples of how atelier projects function as integrated, real-world learning experiences:
1. The Production of a Play (Integrated Literacy, Design & Mathematics)
Rather than teaching reading, writing, and math in isolated, administrative time blocks, this project unifies these disciplines through the tangible creation of theater.
The Spark: Children might show an interest in a particular story or historical event.
The Investigation & Creation: Students do not just read; they interpret characters, write original adaptations, and memorize complex language to build their literacy and speaking skills.
The Mathematical & Spatial Application: The project moves from the page to physical reality. Students must calculate dimensions, design scenery, and build physical props. This requires them to use math as a functional tool to construct three-dimensional spaces, bridging geometry and engineering.
