My teaching philosophy is to encourage students to read like pirates on a treasure hunt. They should look for riches in every passage, seek adventure in every chapter, and uncover meaning in every vocabulary word. Students must dive into texts, leaving no detail behind. Dead questions tell no tales! To survive the early challenges of school, students must know the ropes. Teacher pirates must inspire students by modeling a passion for reading. This sparks students' desire to explore a text's deeper meaning by actively engaging with it. Students learn that treasures found with effort are more rewarding than easily gained rewards. Those who surrender when reading will be defeated. Don't wait for motivation - engage students with great literature to force active reading. Use questions like who, what, when, where, why and how to probe a text's depths. "Why" questions require the most thought but lead to the deepest understanding and higher level skills. Great literature by enlightened authors allows for this active exploration. Encourage students to approach each story with curiosity, anticipation and open-mindedness. Never assume a book will be boring or reading a waste of time - keep an open mind to new experiences. Students won't like every story, but should stay curious and desire learning. Let their minds anticipate the magic authors create. Students may "hear" but not truly listen. Poor listening is a major obstacle readers must overcome quickly through self-monitoring. When attention drifts, reread passages to regain meaning. Thorough reading and rereading builds focus. Active reading is essential - skimming a text is like skipping through a museum and missing the art. Dictation and recitation boost listening and comprehension. Turn on a song and have students write down lyrics to practice active listening.
