Essential Questions Fiction Reading and Understanding

What kinds of essential questions are you and your students asking when reading fiction? Story Interview Questions: Building deep reading comprehension by asking essential questions while reading and analyzing complex fictional writing. Using essential questions helps build enduring understanding and cogent literacy.

1. How do the characters interact with the settings?
Describe where the characters were when the plot became more complex, why do you believe the settings are important to the evolving plot, themes, mood, or tone of the story.


2. What major or minor conflicts, problems, troubles, or circumstances led the characters (protagonist and antagonist) into the climax? Suss out the plot elements of the story. Can you identify any plot holes?

3. What did the characters (protagonist and antagonist) do when their circumstance changed for better or worse. Suss out if there is a sudden change of fortune for the protagonist or antagonist!
