Raising STAAR Test Scores Test!

How to Raise Scores on the STAAR Reading, Math, and Science Test!

How do you raise or improve STAAR Reading, Math, Science Test scores FAST? Improving STAAR Reading, Math, and Science test scores fast is best accomplished by studying tier 2 and tier 3 academic test words. The STAAR test website provides a guild and explanation of STAAR testing and neglects the testing vocabulary in any real or helpful way. Math, Reading and Language Arts vocabulary are divided into individual content specific RIT levels. The tier 2 and 3 vocabulary is not directly or explicityly covered in the STAAR Standard but it is easy to find other resources to prepare for STAAR testing.  Academic Vocabulary list below are my favorite resources to prepare my daily lessons and curriculum.  The lists below are a good resource to start studying for the STAAR test in 2014-2015.

Tier 1 Basic words that commonly appear in spoken language. Because they are heard frequently in numerous contexts and with nonverbal communication, Tier 1 words rarely require explicit instruction.Examples of Tier 1 words are clock, baby, happy and walk.

Tier 2 High frequency words used by mature language users across several content areas. Because of their lack of redundancy in oral language, Tier 2 words present challenges to students who primarily meet them in print. Examples of Tier 2 words are obvious, complex, establish and verify.

Tier 3 Words that are not frequently used except in specific content areas or domains. Tier 3 words are central to building knowledge and conceptual understanding within the various academic domains and should be integral to instruction of content. Medical, legal, biology and mathematics terms are all examples of these words.

Raising Scores on the Common Core Reading (ELA) and Math Test!

The quickest way to raise or improve Common Core Reading (ELA) and Math test scores is to study tier 2 and tier 3 academic vocabulary, The CCSS website provides a guild and explanation of RIT level testing vocabulary for Common Core areas. Common Core State Standards: Focus on Tier 2 & Tier 3 Academic Vocabulary
The new Common Core State Standards for reading and English language arts are three standard deviations above many States passing cut scores (NCLB testing mandate). A (CCSS) white paper to publishers and curriculum developers states a greater focus on Tier 2 high frequency academic vocabulary is needed in the primary grades. Teachers will have a few years to learn and prepare before the new standards are in effect and part of high stakes testing. Preparing students is the proverbial fly in the ointment, meeting the challenge will be virtually impossible to reach in the time allotted. What next? Endless teacher in-service training? I have used variations of Tier 2 high frequency academic vocabulary plus the NWEA tier 3 academic content specific vocabulary for years, but I have never found a qualitative graded tier 2 list! You will find great tier 3 vocabulary list by frequency, grade level, and content but not tier 2 vocabulary by grade level.
I will bring more resources when I develop or find them.

MAP Math Practice Test Grade 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7. and 8. NWEA MAP Test (Measures of Academic Progress) Sample Test to prepare for 2014-2015 Math MAP Test.

The NWEA RIT level Math MAP assessments are comprehensive math test that students take up to four times per year to measure academic growth. Some districts use the MAP test as a high stakes test that must be passed to progress to the next grade. The NWEA MAP test is based on State standards and is being updated to meet the Common Core Standards. The MAP Math test is not going away, it is just becoming more rigorous with the implementation of the Common Core State Standards. Common Core Listening and Speaking Test?

Common Core Listening and Speaking Test may be modeled after test developed by Pearson for students in the UK and India. Pearson Tests of English is a comprehensive English reading, writing, speaking and listening test! Most American students have never taken a test that requires listening and speaking with questions and or giving a oral response to a prompt. The new CCSS ELA test students may eventually take will look like Britain's PTE test! Pearson is the main provider of English Language test around the world i.e. defacto PARCC and Smarter Balanced.

"The Standards are an extension of a prior initiative led by CCSSO and NGA to develop College and Career Readiness (CCR) standards in reading, writing, speaking, listening, and language as well as in mathematics. The CCR Reading, Writing, and Speaking and Listening Standards, released in draft form in September 2009, serve, in revised form, as the backbone for the present document. Listening

The module comprises four sections of increasing difficulty. It takes 40 minutes: 30 - for testing, plus 10 for transferring the answers to an answer sheet. Each section, which can be either a monologue or dialogue, begins with a short introduction telling the candidates about the situation and the speakers. Then they have some time to look through the questions. The first three sections have a break in the middle allowing candidates to look at the remaining questions. Each section is heard only once. At the end of this section students are given 10 minutes to transfer their answers to an answer sheet.

Speaking

The speaking test contains three sections. The first section takes the form of an interview during which candidates may be asked about their hobbies, interests, reasons for taking IELTS exam as well as other general topics such as clothing, free time, computers and the internet or family. In the second section candidates are given a topic card and then have one minute to prepare after which they must speak about the given topic. The third section involves a discussion between the examiner and the candidate, generally on questions relating to the theme which they have already spoken about in part 2. This last section is more abstract, and is usually considered the most difficult.

Common Core test are too rigorous???

Arne Duncan is the "Common Core Crusader" and is the CCSS biggest champion, but at a conference of educational leaders he over stated his real feeling towards parents concerns and worries over the Common Core.

As a former Cross Categorical K-12 Special Education Teacher I know that ALL children are brilliant, if we design test that measure creativity, perseverance, compassion, curiosity, audacity, defiance, desire, and so many "unmeasured domains" of humanities brilliance, these are the true qualities of success and happiness.

My belief is the Common Core adoption is a poorly conceived top down arbitrary mandate, truly unfunded or underfunded, and its rollout is poorly conceived and implemented across schools. It is the wrong solution as implemented because at its heart is more high stakes testing, lack of teacher training,  and high stakes testing that require years and years of high quality enriched curriculum. We have cut billions from school budgets and now schools have to spend what little they do have on unproven one size fits all published text and curriculum?

3rd Grade Bud-Nip (Chlorpropham) Science Project that Teaches the Teacher! What is Bud Nip and why is it keeping sweet potatoes from sprouting, that is what one precocious 3rd grader is asking!  Makes you really think what is in our food!  This third grade girl found an anomaly and persisted to go further doing more research on her science project, that should make everyone think twice what is in our food!!
