Before You Begin: Framing for Students

Explain the two competing frameworks in plain language before presenting any scenario:

  • Consequentialism ("outcomes matter most"): The right choice is the one that leads to the best overall result — even if it means someone has to make a hard, uncomfortable decision.
  • Deontology ("rules matter most"): Some actions are wrong no matter the outcome. Deliberately causing harm to someone — even to prevent a bigger harm — crosses a line that shouldn't be crossed.

Scenario 1: The Classic Switch

A runaway trolley is heading toward five people tied to the track. You're standing at a lever. Pulling it sends the trolley onto a side track, where it will hit one person instead.

Do you pull the lever?

Scenario 2: The Footbridge

Same runaway trolley, same five people. This time you're on a footbridge above the track, standing next to a very large stranger. The only way to stop the trolley is to push him off the bridge onto the track — his size would stop the trolley, saving the five. (You're too light to stop it yourself.)

Do you push him?

Discussion hook: Most people say yes to Scenario 1 and no to Scenario 2, even though the "math" is identical — one life traded for five. Why might that be?

Scenario 3: The Loop Track

The side track loops back around and rejoins the main track before reaching the five people. The one person on the side track is heavy enough to stop the trolley before it loops back. If he weren't there, the trolley would loop around and still hit the five.

Does knowing his body is the only thing stopping the trolley change your answer from Scenario 1?

Scenario 4: The Group Chat

You're an administrator of a school group chat. A rumor is spreading that will embarrass one student badly, but if it keeps spreading unchecked, it will eventually humiliate five students whose names get pulled into it. You can quietly redirect the rumor so it "lands" on just the one original student instead of spreading further, cutting it off.

Do you redirect it?

This is the trolley problem with digital consequences instead of physical ones — a bridge to media literacy and online ethics.

A runaway trolley is heading toward one person. You could pull a lever to divert it onto a side track — but that track has five people on it.
