Model Unit Cost Calculation

$6.20 ÷ 10 hot dogs = $0.62 per hot dog

Students calculate the unit price for each product and build a complete cost-per-unit chart.

Markup and Pricing

Selling Price = Cost + Markup

If a hot dog costs $0.62 and students apply a 150% markup, they calculate the markup and discuss whether the resulting price is sufficient to cover additional business expenses.

Revenue, Expenses, and Profit

PROFIT = REVENUE − EXPENSES

Revenue

Money earned from sales.

Expenses

Money spent on food, supplies, equipment, and operations.

Profit

The positive amount remaining after expenses.

A Reading Sage Project-Based Math Simulation

There is a question that teachers of struggling mathematicians hear all the time:

“When am I ever going to use this?”

Sometimes the question comes from frustration. Sometimes it is a completely legitimate question. For many students, mathematics has become a collection of disconnected worksheets, procedures, and rules that do not appear to have anything to do with the real world.

When I took over a sixth-grade classroom with students who were behind in reading, writing, and mathematics, I knew that traditional remediation alone was not going to be enough. I needed experiences that could help students build number sense, numeracy, mental mathematics, estimation, and confidence while giving them a meaningful reason to use mathematics.

One of the first ideas I developed was a restaurant simulation. Eventually, that idea evolved into something even more engaging: a food truck business simulation.

Students Become Entrepreneurs

Instead of simply solving math problems, students design a food truck, create a brand, develop a menu, purchase ingredients, calculate wholesale costs, set prices, track sales, and determine whether their business makes a profit or a loss.

The central question becomes:

Can you design and operate a profitable food truck using mathematics?

Why Food Trucks Are Perfect for Teaching Rational Numbers

A food truck is essentially a real-world mathematics problem. Every decision involves quantities, prices, unit rates, decimals, ratios, percentages, revenue, and expenses.

How much does one hot dog cost? What does each bun cost? How much should we charge? What happens if we offer a discount? What happens if our expenses are greater than our revenue?

Suddenly, rational numbers are no longer isolated symbols on a worksheet. They represent something students care about: whether their business succeeds.

Revenue Is Not Profit

One of the most important lessons in the simulation is understanding that selling something does not automatically mean making money.

A business can sell $1,000 worth of food and still lose money if its expenses are greater than $1,000.

PROFIT = REVENUE − EXPENSES

This creates a natural context for positive and negative rational numbers. A negative number is no longer abstract. It represents a real business loss.

Mathematics as a Tool

The goal of Hot Dog Heroes is not simply to teach students how to perform a procedure. The goal is to help students see mathematics as a tool for making decisions and solving problems.

Students need mathematics to price their products, give customers change, compare suppliers, avoid losses, and improve their businesses.

And when mathematics becomes necessary for solving a problem students care about, something important happens.

The numbers begin to matter.

Design It. Price It. Sell It. Profit!

Hot Dog Heroes is ultimately about more than hot dogs. It is about helping students see themselves as capable mathematical thinkers.

Give students a meaningful problem. Give them tools. Give them the freedom to make decisions. Let them experience the consequences of those decisions. Then let the mathematics come alive.
