The Joy Engine
The first year I took over that sixth-grade class, I knew we needed a big goal—something worth working toward before anyone had a reason to believe that all the extra effort would pay off.
So I asked the kids a simple question:
What field trip would you actually be excited to go on?
The answer came quickly: the Southern Arizona Renaissance Festival.
It made sense. Sixth grade already touched history, culture, geography, and the idea of stepping into another time and place. The festival also invited something I knew my students would love: building a costume and becoming a character for the day.
They wanted it.
There was only one problem.
We didn't have the money.
The trip would cost close to two thousand dollars once we accounted for the bus, admission, and the fabric and materials we would need for costumes. For a classroom of students who were not exactly swimming in disposable income, that might as well have been two million.
So we opened a coffee shop.
Every Friday morning, before school, our classroom became a little café.
The room was already designed around fantasy and Dungeons & Dragons. I had created a small Parisian café corner with French café chairs beneath a large window and hung paintings of Paris on the walls from my years traveling through Europe. It looked less like a sixth-grade classroom than a place where someone might sit down with a coffee and a book and stay for an hour.
The kids came in early wearing little uniforms.
We baked brownies and cupcakes. We brewed coffee. We took orders from roughly sixty staff members arriving for their morning shifts. I bought supplies from a restaurant-supply store, and the students quickly discovered that running a café was considerably more complicated than pretending to run one.
Every child wanted to bake.
Every child wanted to serve.
And, for many of them, it was the closest thing they had experienced to a real job.
There were hot ovens, hot coffee, real customers, real money, and the possibility of getting something wrong in front of an adult.
The mathematics was just as real.
Scaling a brownie recipe for sixty customers is a fractions problem. Inventory is mathematics. Pricing is mathematics. Adjusting production because a particular product sold out three weeks in a row is mathematics. If you miscalculate, the mistake isn't sitting harmlessly at the bottom of a worksheet. You have too few brownies.
That makes the mathematics matter.
By the end of the year, we had earned our two thousand dollars. We made the costumes, chartered the bus, and went to the Renaissance Festival.
The students were polite. They were professional. They were proud.
And, by every account I have, it was one of the best days of the entire school year.
But the field trip wasn't the important part.
The coffee shop was.
Because joy was never the reward waiting at the end of the real work.
The coffee shop was the real work.
That distinction became one of the central ideas of my teaching career.
Fractions, customer service, inventory, recipe adjustments, demand forecasting, communication, teamwork, and financial responsibility weren't disguised as fun so that children would tolerate them.
They were embedded in something children genuinely wanted to accomplish.
The mathematics wasn't underneath the fun.
The mathematics was inside it.
Nobody in that room could have told you exactly where the math lesson ended and the joy began.
There was no seam.
There wasn't supposed to be.
Joy Is the Mechanism, Not the Reward
This is the thesis of the chapter, and I want to answer the objection I can already hear from a skeptical reader:
Isn't this just recess with extra steps?
No.
The coffee shop is the proof.
Recess does not require a child to scale a recipe for sixty customers, track inventory, notice that one product is consistently selling out, adjust production, handle a customer's order, or work professionally with an adult.
Our coffee shop did.
Rigor and joy were never actually in competition.
We have simply spent decades confusing the appearance of seriousness with the presence of serious learning.
A worksheet can look rigorous.
So can a textbook.
So can a quiet room full of children filling in blanks.
But seriousness is not the same thing as rigor.
A room that looks, from the doorway, like a coffee shop, a bakery, a chess club, an artist's studio, or a puppet theater is not necessarily a room where rigor has gone to die.
It may be a room where rigor has finally stopped needing to look miserable in order to be taken seriously.
That distinction matters.
Because when children are genuinely invested in what they are doing, we can ask more of them—not less.
We can give them harder problems because they have a reason to solve them.
We can demand revision because the product matters.
We can expect persistence because quitting means something.
We can insist on accuracy because mistakes have consequences beyond a grade.
Joy does not lower the bar.
Done well, it gives children a reason to climb over it.
Every Modality Is a Door In
I filled my classroom with genuinely high-quality puppets—full-size characters, chefs, police officers, fantasy creatures, and enough variety to make the room feel like a small community theater.
There were never quite enough for every student to hold one at the same time.
That was probably for the best.
We built miniature theaters using curtain rods and PVC tubing. Students wrote their own plays, constructed sets, worked on dialogue, practiced staging, and performed.
One year, inspired by a class favorite, Dragons Love Tacos, the students built an entire set, wrote a script, and performed it for the kindergarten and first-grade students down the hall.
They were learning literature.
They were learning writing.
They were learning oral language.
They were learning collaboration.
They were learning performance.
They were learning how an audience changes the way you communicate.
And they were having an enormous amount of fun.
The puppets also gave us something more difficult to measure.
They created psychological distance.
A puppet can say something a child isn't yet ready to say as themselves.
If we were talking about bullying, a student could make the puppet describe what it felt like to be excluded. If we were exploring conflict, the puppet could become the character who was angry. If we were examining motivation, the puppet could act out what a character wanted and why.
The child wasn't necessarily talking about themselves.
They were talking through the puppet.
That small distinction can make a surprisingly large difference.
And when we were studying literary elements or poetic devices, acting a concept out gave students another pathway into abstraction. A metaphor, personification, characterization, or point of view could become something they could see, hear, manipulate, and perform.
I should add one practical warning.
The first thing that happens when you hand a room full of energetic children a puppet is that somebody tries to use it as a weapon.
Of course they do.
So we established the same ohana rules for the puppets that we established for everything else in the classroom.
The puppet wasn't exempt from respect.
Neither was the person holding it.
That wasn't a flaw in the method.
It was part of the method.
Real materials, real freedom, and real responsibility require children to learn how to handle freedom.
Turning Repetition Into a Game
The Legendary Lands and Vocab Candy, which I introduced earlier in the book, grow out of this same principle, so I won't repeat their mechanics here.
But there is something important about games that is easy to miss.
Games give children a reason to want the repetition.
A child practicing a vocabulary word for the fortieth time on a worksheet knows exactly what is happening.
It is the fortieth repetition.
A child encountering that same word for the fortieth time in a game may experience something entirely different.
They are trying to capture territory.
Beat their previous score.
Help their team.
Unlock something.
Win the next round.
The repetition hasn't disappeared.
The reason for doing it has changed.
That distinction matters because mastery requires repetition. There is simply no way around it.
Fluency requires practice.
Vocabulary requires retrieval.
Math facts require retrieval.
Spelling requires retrieval.
Reading requires repeated encounters with words and patterns.
The question isn't whether children need repetition.
They do.
The question is whether we are going to make them endure the repetition or give them a reason to pursue it.
A good game doesn't eliminate practice.
It makes practice desirable.
The Brain Remembers What It Feels
At some point during those years, I read John Medina's Brain Rules, and the book gave me language for something I had been discovering in the classroom through experience.
The research behind Medina's popular treatment goes much deeper than the book itself. Neuroscientists, including James McGaugh, have spent decades studying the relationship between emotional arousal and memory consolidation. Emotional experiences can influence how strongly memories are consolidated and later retrieved.
That doesn't mean that every funny lesson becomes permanent, or that emotional intensity automatically produces learning.
It means something more useful:
What we care about is more likely to receive the brain's attention.
Think about your own memory.
You probably remember where you were when something unexpected happened.
You remember an embarrassing moment from twenty years ago.
You remember a song associated with a particular person.
You remember the joke that made an entire room lose control.
You may not remember the worksheet you completed the same afternoon.
Emotion does not replace good instruction.
But emotion can make an experience more salient.
And salience matters.
A child who laughs, gasps, builds, performs, discovers, argues, surprises a friend, solves a genuine problem, or watches something they created actually work is having a different learning experience from a child who spends forty minutes completing a page of disconnected questions.
The point isn't to make every lesson spectacular.
That would be exhausting and, frankly, impossible.
The point is to recognize that emotion is part of the learning environment, not an enemy of it.
Surprise as a Discipline
Some days I threw the entire daily schedule out the window.
Not because I didn't value structure.
Because sometimes the most productive thing we could do was pursue one enormous problem instead of five smaller lessons.
One of our challenges involved designing a habitat pod for four astronauts traveling to Mars.
Students had to account for the length of the journey, available space, water recycling, supplies, and the physical constraints of their design. They worked with grid paper, card stock, measurement tools, and a scale astronaut I had printed on our 3D printer so that they could reason about proportion rather than simply guess.
Another challenge was our Dollar Tree survival exercise.
Teams received a collection of inexpensive materials and had to figure out how they could provide food, water, shelter, and fire for a specified period of time using only the available resources.
The room changed on those days.
Conversation increased.
Students who rarely volunteered answers suddenly had opinions.
Students who struggled to sit through a traditional lesson could work for an extended period when the work had a purpose they could see.
That instinct came directly from my years coaching Odyssey of the Mind.
Odyssey taught me something I never forgot:
Give children a problem that is genuinely worth solving, and many of them will work harder than you ever could have made them work.
I also borrowed the Odyssey model of spontaneous problems for smaller doses.
Sometimes, in the middle of a reading or mathematics block, I would stop.
"Okay. New problem."
Fifteen minutes.
A handful of materials.
A strange constraint.
A problem nobody had seen before.
Then we were off.
It was enough to reset the attention of a room without turning the interruption into a reward for disengagement.
And this connects directly to something every teacher worries about:
attendance.
Students knew that missing school could mean missing the day the Mars habitat was built.
It could mean missing the day the class figured out how to turn a shower curtain into a functional shelter.
It could mean missing the next chapter of a project they had helped create.
The classroom became a place where something might happen.
That matters.
Humor Lowers the Defenses
I've always loved a joke.
I've also always trusted a little absurdity more than I trust most classroom-management advice.
Humor was one of the simplest ways I found to bring a drifting student back into the room.
During read-alouds—especially Choose Your Own Adventure books—I would occasionally drop something completely unexpected into the lesson.
Sometimes it was a joke.
Sometimes it was an absurd observation.
Sometimes it was a ridiculous voice.
The important part was timing.
The students who had been listening laughed.
The students who had checked out often looked around, wondering what they had missed.
And nobody wants to be the only person who missed the joke.
It was a strange kind of peer pressure, but it was pointed in the right direction.
Attention.
We read Horrible Histories and Horrible Science for the same reason.
The books were funny.
They were gross.
They were memorable.
And they gave us a doorway into serious questions.
Why did the Romans clean themselves the way they did?
What does hygiene tell us about a civilization?
Why do societies develop the customs they do?
How much of what we consider "normal" is actually cultural?
The laugh wasn't the end of the lesson.
It was the door into the lesson.
And that distinction is important.
Humor doesn't mean turning school into a comedy club.
It means understanding that a child who is laughing with you is often more available to learn with you.
I want to close this section with something a former student wrote about me because it captures what I could never have put into a lesson plan.
She had to leave school early during a difficult period at home. Years later, she nominated me for Bear Essential News' Teacher of the Month, an honor I received.
In her letter, she described the humor and laughter in our classroom as something that helped carry her through that difficult period.
She remembered the puppets.
She remembered laughing.
She remembered being in a room that refused to take itself too seriously.
Another student, years apart from her, said something remarkably similar about our Odyssey of the Mind experience.
I don't think those memories are accidental.
For some children, school is the most stable part of the day.
For some, it may be the only place where they get an hour without having to carry everything happening outside the classroom.
That doesn't mean a teacher can fix a child's life with humor.
We can't.
But we can create a room where, for an hour, a child gets to be a child.
Sometimes that matters more than we know.
The Wisdom of the Hand
A puppet theater built from curtain rods.
A costume sewn from fabric purchased with money earned by a class coffee shop.
A Mars habitat assembled from card stock and grid paper.
A tent constructed from a shower curtain.
None of these things happened because I told students that hands-on learning was important.
They happened because students' hands were actually doing the work.
That distinction matters.
We often talk about making as though it is decoration added to "real" learning.
I believe the opposite.
Making can be a way of thinking.
A child who builds a model has to make decisions.
A child who sews a costume has to measure.
A child who constructs a puppet theater has to solve spatial problems.
A child who builds a survival shelter has to test an idea against reality.
The physical object becomes a record of the thinking that produced it.
This is what I mean by the Wisdom of the Hand.
The hand doesn't replace the mind.
It gives the mind something to work with.
What the hand builds can become something the mind can return to.
That is why this idea connects so directly to the atelier described earlier in the book, to the tissue-paper flowers in Chapter 5, and to the coffee shop that opened this chapter.
The materials are different.
The principle is the same.
Learning becomes more powerful when children are not merely asked to think about something, but are given something to think with.
Where This Connects Back to Bloom
This chapter also brings us back to one of the central ideas of the entire book: Bloom's famous "two sigma" problem.
A skilled tutor can produce extraordinary gains because one child has something that twenty or thirty children cannot automatically have:
attention.
The tutor can notice the hesitation.
The tutor can change the explanation.
The tutor can ask the next question.
The tutor can see when the child has mentally left the room.
A classroom teacher doesn't have that luxury with every student simultaneously.
When the ratio changes, something has to compensate.
One answer is better systems.
Another is better instructional design.
And one of the most overlooked answers is engagement.
A classroom of twenty-nine children cannot provide the same individualized attention as a one-to-one tutoring relationship.
But it can create something a tutor doesn't have in quite the same way:
a shared experience that students genuinely want to be part of.
The Joy Engine is my attempt to describe that mechanism.
It doesn't replace good teaching.
It doesn't replace differentiation.
It doesn't replace feedback.
It doesn't replace expertise.
And it certainly doesn't mean that every lesson should be a carnival.
Instead, joy can help compensate for something the traditional classroom lacks: the automatic attentional pull created by one-to-one interaction.
When the room itself is surprising, meaningful, social, funny, physical, creative, or consequential, students have another reason to stay cognitively present.
That's not a soft argument.
It's an instructional argument.
Joy doesn't simply make school more pleasant. It helps make attention sustainable.
And in a classroom, attention is the currency in which learning is purchased.
What the Joy Engine Actually Cost
I want to end this chapter honestly because everything I've described came at a real price.
And not just the price of art supplies.
My classroom was almost always full.
At one point, our school had a 21st Century Community Learning Centers grant, and the district eventually had to open additional sections because so many families wanted their children in my classroom.
Many of those families had children receiving special education services.
Parents told me that getting their child into my room felt like winning the lottery.
They had been quietly taught, sometimes for years, that a disability label represented a ceiling.
I spent my career trying to prove that it didn't.
Not every parent wanted their child in my room.
Some didn't.
Some believed their child needed something different. Some disliked my expectations. Some didn't appreciate that a classroom with clear expectations around bullying meant that behavior had consequences.
That was okay.
A classroom shouldn't have to be loved by everyone to be effective.
After school, I ran a chess program, an Odyssey of the Mind team, and a baking and cooking club. Some of that work was funded through my after-school program pay, and some of it came out of my own pocket.
The classroom was also my sanctuary.
I was sometimes in that room eight or ten hours a day.
I wanted it to be the room that would have reached the frightened, artistic child I had once been.
Teachers receive a modest federal tax deduction for classroom supplies, but anyone who has actually furnished an ambitious classroom knows how quickly that disappears.
I spent considerably more than that every year.
I did it willingly.
Not because I thought teachers should have to subsidize public education.
They shouldn't.
I did it because I believed the room mattered.
The reward system worked the same way.
Sometimes students earned a noodle feast around a conference table using real porcelain and chopsticks.
Sometimes the reward was simply being recognized for something that mattered.
And that distinction was important.
I wasn't looking for the highest test score.
I wasn't rewarding only the students who were already successful.
I was looking for the particular gift a child had brought to the community that week.
Maybe it was patience.
Maybe compassion.
Maybe artistic talent.
Maybe persistence.
Maybe helping a struggling classmate without being asked.
Rule 1 of my classroom was never just a slogan:
Every child is gifted.
The gifts are simply distributed differently.
And every one of those gifts deserved a moment when the child could feel that it mattered.
And Then It Ended
The hardest part of this story is that the approach didn't end because it stopped working.
It ended because the institutional context changed.
A new principal arrived.
The evaluation system was different.
The Danielson framework became part of how my classroom was interpreted.
And eventually, the relationship between us deteriorated.
At one point, I was accused of possibly manipulating test scores.
The accusation was difficult for me to understand because the assessment in question was administered under controlled conditions: students worked independently in a monitored environment, with technology staff present.
From my perspective, the alleged mechanism simply did not make logistical sense.
But the accusation mattered for a different reason.
It represented something I had begun to feel increasingly strongly:
I was no longer being trusted.
I had spent almost twenty years working under a principal who supported me.
I lasted less than three years under the principal who followed her.
I told her plainly:
This is fidelity to the child, not fidelity to a curriculum purchased from a company in New York City that has never met a single kid in this building.
I still believe that.
But I also want to be careful here.
I'm describing one administrator, in one building, during one particular period of my career.
I'm not claiming that every Danielson evaluation is harmful.
I'm not claiming that every principal transition produces distrust.
I'm not claiming that evaluation systems are inherently bad.
My narrower claim is this:
In my particular case, an evaluation framework became a vehicle for distrust rather than a tool for professional growth.
And when trust disappears, even a successful classroom can become impossible to sustain.
The Promise I Couldn't Keep
The hardest part of losing that classroom wasn't the reprimand.
It was a promise.
A little girl had been trying to get into my classroom since kindergarten.
By the time she reached the age when she could join me, she had become something of the school's quiet ambassador of empathy.
She was the child who would find me at recess if someone needed a stuffed animal, a quiet corner, or simply a soft place to land.
One year she came into my room with a friend.
She picked out a plushie for her friend.
Then she stayed behind.
She had just learned that she had not been accepted into the school's gifted program.
She looked at me and asked, almost afraid of the answer:
"Does that mean I can't be in your class?"
I told her the truth.
She didn't need a gifted label to belong in my classroom.
She didn't need a particular score.
She didn't need a designation.
All she needed to do was ask.
Then I told her something I wished I didn't have to tell her.
This might be my last year.
She started to cry.
She told me that my classroom was safe.
She told me it felt like a miracle.
And I promised her I would stay.
I couldn't keep that promise.
That remains one of the genuine heartaches of my career.
No evaluation framework can measure that.
No observation rubric has a checkbox for it.
No district improvement plan can capture what it means for a child to believe that one room in a school is safe—and then to discover that the adult who made it safe is leaving.
But that is also why I believe this chapter belongs in this book.
Because joy is not frivolous when the alternative is a child who has stopped believing that school belongs to them.
What We Choose to Fund
Schools make choices every day about what matters.
Those choices are reflected not only in curriculum maps and strategic plans but in budgets.
We find money for some things.
We struggle to find it for others.
We can spend millions on stadiums, pools, athletic facilities, and other large capital projects while simultaneously debating whether libraries, art programs, makerspaces, music, counseling, or classroom resources are "essential."
I'm not arguing that athletics don't matter.
They do.
I'm arguing that budgets communicate values.
So do schedules.
So do staffing decisions.
So do the things we measure.
A joy engine rarely appears as a line item that a superintendent can defend at a board meeting.
You can't easily put "a classroom children desperately want to attend" into a spreadsheet.
You can't quantify the moment a child realizes that their artistic talent matters.
You can't put a dollar value on the student who discovers that they are good at solving problems.
And yet those experiences are part of education.
I built a classroom that answered the question of what school was for differently.
For as long as I was allowed to build it.
The Ten Rules of the Joy Engine
51. [Foundation] Joy Is Not the Reward for Learning; Joy Is Part of How Learning Happens.
Why it matters:
The Friday coffee shop wasn't a break from the math. It was the math wearing an apron. There was no seam between the fun and the arithmetic because there was never supposed to be one.
What it looks like:
A classroom where visitors can't easily identify where the "real learning" ends and the "fun part" begins.
What it requires:
Stop designing joy as something students receive after the work is complete. Design learning experiences in which joy, purpose, and academic work are part of the same activity.
52. [Practice] If Students Can Sing It, Chant It, Move It, Build It, Draw It, or Act It Out, Give Them the Chance.
Why it matters:
Different students enter understanding through different doors. A concept that remains abstract on a page can become concrete when students hear it, move it, build it, or perform it.
What it looks like:
A concept revisited through multiple modalities rather than being delivered through one mode of instruction.
What it requires:
Build at least one non-worksheet pathway into the learning of important concepts.
53. [Foundation] Never Let Rigor Become Synonymous With Boredom.
Why it matters:
A recipe scaled for sixty adult customers can be every bit as rigorous as a fractions worksheet—and much harder to fake your way through.
What it looks like:
Visitors may initially mistake a rigorous learning experience for play until they see the mathematics, literacy, reasoning, or problem-solving embedded inside it.
What it requires:
Audit your "fun" activities for genuine intellectual rigor. Then audit your "rigorous" activities for unnecessary joylessness.
54. [Practice] Turn Repetition Into a Game Whenever Possible.
Why it matters:
Mastery requires repetition. A good game gives students a reason to want the next repetition.
What it looks like:
Students asking to continue practicing because they want another turn, another challenge, another round, or another opportunity to improve.
What it requires:
Build or borrow game structures for skills that depend heavily on repeated retrieval and practice.
55. [Foundation] The Brain Remembers What Matters; Make Learning Worth Remembering.
Why it matters:
Research on emotion and memory suggests that emotional arousal can influence memory consolidation. Emotion is not a substitute for instruction, but it can make experiences more salient and memorable.
What it looks like:
Students remembering a lesson months later because they laughed, built something, experienced surprise, solved a meaningful problem, or connected the learning to something they cared about.
What it requires:
Deliberately create meaningful emotional hooks—humor, surprise, curiosity, genuine stakes, beauty, or wonder—when long-term retention matters.
56. [Practice] Surprise Students Often Enough That Curiosity Stays Awake.
Why it matters:
A Mars habitat build or unexpected problem-solving challenge creates a legitimate reason to want to be present.
What it looks like:
Students entering the classroom with the question, "What are we doing today?"
What it requires:
Break predictable routines periodically with authentic challenges, unusual materials, unexpected questions, or immersive learning experiences.
57. [Practice] Humor Lowers Defenses and Opens Participation.
Why it matters:
A well-timed joke can redirect peer attention toward the lesson rather than away from it. For some children, laughter can also make school feel safer and more human.
What it looks like:
Students who were drifting back into the lesson because they didn't want to miss what everyone else was experiencing.
What it requires:
Give yourself permission to be genuinely funny. Use humor strategically, not constantly, and connect it back to meaningful content.
58. [Practice] Movement Is Not a Break From Learning; Movement Can Be Learning.
Why it matters:
Building a shelter, staging a play, constructing a model, or physically demonstrating a concept can make abstract ideas concrete.
What it looks like:
Students moving because the learning requires movement—not simply because they need a break from learning.
What it requires:
Before adding movement as a reward or break, ask whether the movement itself can become part of the intellectual task.

What it requires:
Treat artistic creation and making as legitimate instructional pathways, not merely optional extras.

Every costume sewn, set constructed, model assembled, and shelter tested requires decisions that a worksheet cannot fully reproduce.

Whenever possible, give important concepts a physical form that students must manipulate, construct, test, or revise.
How It Works: The Practices Behind the Joy Engine
The Joy Engine is not a philosophy that depends on personality.
You don't have to be a comedian.
You don't need a beautiful classroom.
You don't need a giant budget.
You don't need expensive puppets.
What you need is a willingness to redesign the relationship between purpose, practice, and pleasure.

The Engine Beneath the Engine
When I look back across the coffee shop, the puppets, the games, the Mars habitat, the survival challenge, the costumes, the jokes, the art, and the endless things children built with their hands, I don't see a collection of tricks.
I see a single design principle.
Give children something worth caring about.
Then make the learning necessary to accomplish it.
That is the Joy Engine.
It isn't bribery.
It isn't entertainment.
It isn't lowering standards.
It isn't turning school into recess.
And it isn't the belief that children should only do things they enjoy.
Children need challenge.
They need productive struggle.
They need feedback.
They need repetition.
They need correction.
They need to learn things that are difficult.
But difficulty becomes a different experience when there is a reason to persist.
The coffee shop wasn't easy.
The Mars habitat wasn't easy.
Writing and rehearsing a play wasn't easy.
Building a survival shelter wasn't easy.
Learning vocabulary through repeated play wasn't easy.
None of those experiences removed rigor.
They gave rigor a reason.
That may be the most important distinction in this entire chapter.
Children don't need school to be easy.
They need school to feel worth the effort.
And sometimes the difference between those two things is joy.
Chapter 6: The Joy Engine
The first year I took over that sixth-grade class, I knew it needed a big goal — something worth the extra effort at the very start of the year, before anyone had a reason yet to trust that effort would pay off. I asked the kids what kind of field trip actually excited them, and steered the conversation toward the Southern Arizona Renaissance Festival, since sixth grade already touched history, culture, and geography, and the festival's whole tradition is building your own costume and stepping into a character for the day. They wanted it. The problem was the cost — close to two thousand dollars for the bus, the entrance, the cloth for costumes — and none of us had it.
So we opened a coffee shop. Fridays, before school, in a classroom already themed around fantasy and Dungeons and Dragons, we started baking brownies and cupcakes and pulling shots of coffee, using supplies I picked up from a restaurant supply store. The kids came in early, in little uniforms, and took orders from the roughly sixty staff members rolling in for their morning shift. By the time the bell rang, most of the baking was already done — folded into the math block as fractions, since scaling a brownie recipe up for sixty adults is a fraction problem with real stakes attached to getting it wrong. Every kid wanted to bake. Every kid wanted to be a server. For a lot of them, it was the first real job they'd ever had — hot ovens, hot coffee, actual customers, actual money. I'd built a little Parisian café corner in the room itself, French café chairs under a big window, my own paintings of Paris on the wall from my years traveling through Europe, so the whole thing felt like more than a fundraiser. It felt like they'd been let into somewhere adult. By the end of the year we'd made our two thousand dollars, sewn the costumes, chartered the bus, and had the Renaissance Festival day everyone had been working toward since September — polite, professional, and, by every account I have, one of the best days of that entire year.
I want to be plain about what that Friday coffee shop actually was, because it's the whole argument of this chapter compressed into one classroom fundraiser: joy was never the reward sitting at the end of the real work. The coffee shop was the real work. Fractions, customer service, inventory, recipe adjustment when the snickerdoodle brownies sold out three weeks running and the kids had to plan for demand the next time — none of that was dressed up as fun to make the math go down easier. The math was inside the fun from the start, doing its actual job, and nobody in that room could have told you where the arithmetic lesson ended and the joy began, because there was no seam between them.
Joy Is the Mechanism, Not the Reward
Rule 51 is the thesis this entire chapter exists to defend, and I want to answer the objection a skeptical reader is already forming before it gets a chance to fully form: isn't this just recess with extra steps? No — and the coffee shop is the proof. A recess period doesn't teach a child to scale a recipe for sixty customers, track which baked goods sold out and which didn't, or hold themselves professionally while taking an order from an adult who intimidates them a little. Rigor and joy were never actually in competition. A school system convinced they were is mistaking the seriousness of a worksheet for the seriousness of the learning happening underneath it — and a room that looks, from the doorway, like a coffee shop, a bakery, a chess club, an artist's studio, or a puppet theater is not a room where rigor went to die. It's a room where rigor finally stopped needing to look miserable to be taken seriously.
Every Modality Is a Door In
I filled my classroom with genuinely high-end puppets — Sesame Street quality, full-size, a whole cast of fantasy characters, chefs, police officers, enough for real community theater even though I never had quite enough for every student to hold one at once. We built miniature theaters out of curtain rods and PVC tubing, and kids wrote their own plays, built their own sets, and learned staging and dialogue the way you actually learn staging and dialogue — by doing it badly first, in front of an audience of six-year-olds who didn't care. One year, off the back of a class favorite, Dragons Love Tacos, they built a full set, wrote a script, and performed it for the kindergartners and first graders down the hall.
The puppets did double duty. They were a safe rehearsal space for real human situations — what it feels like to be bullied, how to respond when someone's cruel to you — because a puppet lets a child say something true without having to say it as themselves first. And when we were working through literary elements or poetic devices, acting a concept out with a puppet got a room to real understanding roughly ten times faster than the same concept ever moved through a worksheet or an app. I'll also say, honestly, that the very first thing that happens every time you hand a room full of rascals a puppet is that a few of them try to use it as a weapon, and you have to sit them down and explain that the same ohana rules that hold the rest of the classroom together apply to the puppets too. That's not a flaw in the method. That's just what building anything with real materials and real freedom actually looks like in the first ten minutes.
Turning Repetition Into a Game
The Legendary Lands and Vocab Candy, from earlier chapters, both live inside this same principle, and I won't repeat their mechanics here — but it's worth naming why gamified repetition works, since "make it a game" can sound like a gimmick if you don't say the quiet part out loud: a game gives a child a reason to want the fortieth rep, not just tolerate it. A worksheet's fortieth repetition of the same skill announces itself as the fortieth repetition. A game's fortieth repetition just feels like getting closer to winning.
The Brain Remembers What It Feels
Somewhere in the middle of building all of this, I read John Medina's Brain Rules, and it did something I don't think a book has done for me before or since: it told me, with actual neuroscience behind it, that what I'd already been doing on instinct for years was exactly right. The underlying research goes back further than Medina's book — decades of work on the amygdala's role in memory consolidation, most notably from neuroscientist James McGaugh, has established that emotionally arousing experiences get consolidated into long-term memory differently, and more durably, than emotionally flat ones. A joke, a song, a moment of genuine surprise, embeds itself in a way a worksheet completed in silence simply doesn't, no matter how much content that worksheet technically covered. That's Rule 55, and it's the closest thing this chapter has to a scientific guarantee: a room that makes children feel something while they learn is a room that's cheating the forgetting curve, on purpose, using the brain's own architecture instead of fighting it.
Surprise as a Discipline
Some days, I threw the entire daily schedule out the window on purpose. We'd spend the whole day on one enormous problem instead — design a habitat pod for four astronauts traveling to Mars, eight months there, eight months back, four months on the ground, working within real measurement constraints, solving your own water recycling, building it out of grid paper and card stock and a scale astronaut I'd printed on our 3D printer so nobody was guessing at proportions. Or the Dollar Tree survival challenge: a crate of dollar-store items, and a team has to plan real food, water, shelter, and fire for twenty-four or forty-eight hours using only what's in the crate. Conversation and collaboration went through the roof on those days in a way they never quite did on a normal Tuesday. That instinct came straight out of my years as an Odyssey of the Mind coach, where kids spend months solving one open-ended engineering problem and then have to present it as a skit on top of everything else — and I also borrowed OM's "spontaneous problem" format for smaller doses: a fifteen-minute detour, dropped into the middle of a reading or math block, just to reset a room's attention before it started to drift.
This is also where Rule 56 connects directly to something every teacher actually cares about: attendance. Kids knew that missing a day might mean missing the entire Martian habitat build, or the day the class figured out how to rig a shower curtain into a working tent. And they knew that missing assignments, for any reason, meant catching up during Fun Friday instead of joining it — so showing up and staying genuinely engaged while you were there was the only way to protect your Friday. That's not a threat. That's just what happens when the room itself is worth being present for.
Humor Lowers the Exact Defenses a Struggling Learner Walks In With
I've always loved a joke, and I've always trusted a little bit of absurdity more than I trust most classroom management advice, especially after reading Brain Rules confirmed I wasn't wrong to lean into it. During a read-aloud — Choose Your Own Adventure books especially — I'd drop something completely out of left field, timed specifically to catch anyone who'd checked out. It became a running joke in the best way: the kids who'd been staring at their own finger instead of listening would miss the punch line entirely, and the rest of the room, laughing, would make that unmistakably obvious. Nobody wants to be the one who didn't get the joke. That's real peer pressure, pointed at attention instead of against it. We read Horrible Histories and Horrible Science for the same reason — genuinely funny, genuinely gross, the kind of book that gets a real laugh out of a room and then, immediately after, a real Socratic seminar about why the Romans cleaned themselves the way they did and what that says about a civilization we usually only picture wearing togas and giving speeches.
I want to close this section with something a student wrote about me, because it's the truest thing anyone has ever told me about why the jokes mattered. She had to leave school early one year during a hard stretch at home, and she later nominated me for Bear Essential News's Teacher of the Month, which I received. In her letter, she said the humor and the laughter in our classroom had been her salvation during a genuinely difficult time in her life — that laughing with me, laughing at the puppets, being in a room that refused to take itself too seriously, was the medicine she needed that year. Another student, years apart from her, said almost the exact same thing about Odyssey of the Mind. I don't think that's a coincidence. I think a room built to take joy seriously ends up, for some children, being the only place in their week where nothing hurts for an hour.
The Wisdom of the Hand
Puppet theaters built from curtain rods. Costumes sewn from cloth the coffee shop paid for. A Mars pod built from card stock and grid paper. A tent rigged from a shower curtain. None of that happens without a child's actual hands doing actual work, and none of it is decoration on top of the real learning. It is the real learning, made physical. What the hand builds, the mind keeps — that's Rule 60, and it's the thread running underneath every single thing this chapter has described, from the atelier walls in Chapter 3 to the tissue paper flowers in Chapter 5 to the coffee shop that opened this one.
Where This Connects Back to Bloom
I want to name this connection directly, the same way the last four chapters have. A tutor doesn't need to manufacture engagement through gimmicks, because one-on-one attention is inherently engaging — a child knows someone is watching them, specifically, right now. A classroom of twenty-nine children loses that automatic engagement the moment the ratio changes, and a lot of what looks like a discipline problem in a struggling classroom is actually an engagement problem wearing a discipline costume. Joy, deployed deliberately rather than left to chance, is how a classroom claws back some of what a 1-to-1 ratio provides for free. The Joy Engine doesn't just make school more pleasant. It's a direct substitute for the attention a tutor's ratio would otherwise supply — the emotional charge of a genuinely joyful, surprising, hands-on room does some of the same work that individualized attention does, by making the material impossible to tune out. That's not a soft argument. It's the same hard mechanism this whole book has been chasing, applied to motivation instead of instruction.
What the Joy Engine Actually Cost
I want to close this chapter honestly, because I think a reader deserves to know that everything above came at a real price, and not just in art supplies.
My classroom was always at capacity. We had a 21st Century Community Learning Centers grant, and the district eventually had to open additional sections because so many families requested me specifically — a lot of them families of children in special education, who told me, more than once, that getting their kid into my room felt like winning the lottery, because they'd been quietly sold the idea that a label meant a ceiling, and I spent every year proving that it didn't. Other parents didn't want their kids anywhere near my room — the ones raising a child on the promise that his ego would never be checked, who didn't love that a classroom with zero tolerance for bullying meant their son's behavior had actual consequences for the first time. I ran a chess program, an Odyssey of the Mind team, and a baking and cooking club after school, funded partly out of my own after-school program pay, because the classroom itself needed to be a sanctuary for me too — I was in that room eight, sometimes ten hours a day, and I wanted it to be the room that would have reached the scared, artistic child I used to be. The reward system ran on the same principle as everything else — real porcelain, real chopsticks, a conference table set for a noodle feast during lunch, for any student who'd been a genuinely excellent peer tutor that week. Not for the gifted-and-talented kids. For whoever had shown their particular gift that week, because Rule 1 was never a slogan in my room — every child is gifted, some in art, some in compassion, some in patience with a struggling partner, and every one of those gifts got a real, tangible moment of being treated like it mattered.
And then it ended — not because the approach stopped working, but because a new principal arrived with a clipboard and the Danielson framework, and decided my classroom's success needed a different explanation than the one sitting right in front of her. I was accused, at one point, of possibly manipulating test scores — on an assessment where every single child sits at a different question, administered in a monitored lab with an IT staff member present the entire time, which makes the accusation close to logistically impossible. I lasted almost twenty years under one principal who backed me, and less than three under the one who followed her. I told her plainly: this is fidelity to the child, not fidelity to a curriculum bought from a company in New York City that has never met a single kid in this building. It didn't matter. I want to be as fair here as I've tried to be everywhere else this comes up: I'm describing one administrator, in one building, and I'm not claiming every Danielson evaluation or every new-principal transition goes this way. I'm confident only in the narrower claim — that in this specific case, an evaluation framework became a vehicle for distrust rather than a tool for genuine improvement.
The hardest part of losing that room wasn't the reprimand. It was a promise I had to break. A little girl had been trying to get into my class since kindergarten — she was, by then, the school's quiet ambassador of empathy, the kid who'd come find me at recess if someone on the playground needed a stuffed animal and a soft place to land. The year I was being pushed out, she came to my room with a friend, picked out a plushie for her, and then stayed behind. She'd just found out she hadn't been accepted into the school's gifted program, and she asked, almost afraid of the answer, whether that meant she couldn't be in my class after all. I told her the truth — that she never needed a gifted label to belong in that room, that all it ever took was asking. They govern by policy and by bureaucratic consensus, and a joy engine doesn't show up as a line item they know how to defend to their own board — even while districts find millions for stadiums, pools, and gymnasiums, and treat the art room and the library as the first places to cut when a budget gets tight. That's not a funding problem. That's a statement about what we've collectively decided a child's education is actually for. I built a room that answered that question differently, for as long as I was allowed to.
The Ten Rules
51. [Foundation] Joy is not the reward for learning; joy is part of how learning happens.
Why it matters: The Friday coffee shop wasn't a break from the math. It was the math, wearing an apron — there was no seam between the fun and the arithmetic because there was never supposed to be one.
What it looks like: A room where you genuinely cannot point to where the "real learning" ends and the "fun part" begins.
What it requires: Stop designing joy as a reward that comes after the work is done, and start designing it as the delivery mechanism for the work itself.
52. [Practice] If students can sing it, chant it, move it, build it, draw it, or act it out, give them the chance.
Why it matters: A puppet gets a room to real understanding of a literary device roughly ten times faster than a worksheet ever will.
What it looks like: The same concept taught through three different modalities in the same week, until every kind of learner has found their door in.
What it requires: Build at least one non-worksheet modality into your regular rotation for any concept worth teaching well.
53. [Foundation] Never let rigor become synonymous with boredom.
Why it matters: A recipe scaled for sixty adult customers is exactly as rigorous as a fractions worksheet, and considerably harder to fake your way through.
What it looks like: Visitors mistaking a genuinely rigorous activity for playtime, right up until they see the actual academic content embedded in it.
What it requires: Audit your "fun" activities for real rigor, and audit your "rigorous" activities for whether they actually need to be joyless to work.
54. [Practice] Turn repetition into a game whenever possible.
Why it matters: A game gives a child a reason to want the fortieth rep. A worksheet just announces that it's the fortieth rep.
What it looks like: Students asking to keep playing a vocabulary or math game past the time you'd allotted for it.
What it requires: Build or borrow at least one game structure for any skill that requires heavy repetition to master.
55. [Foundation] The brain remembers emotional events — make learning worth remembering.
Why it matters: A joke, a song, a genuine surprise outlasts a silent worksheet in memory, and the neuroscience behind that isn't a nice theory. It's how memory consolidation actually works.
What it looks like: A student recalling a lesson from months earlier, unprompted, because of the emotional hook it was built around.
What it requires: Deliberately build an emotional hook — humor, surprise, genuine stakes — into material you actually need students to retain long-term.
56. [Practice] Surprise students often enough that curiosity stays awake.
Why it matters: A Mars habitat build day is a day nobody wants to miss — and that's not manipulation, that's just what a room worth showing up for looks like.
What it looks like: Improved attendance and engagement specifically on and around days built for genuine surprise.
What it requires: Break your own routine on a real but unpredictable schedule, often enough that students never fully know what's coming.
57. [Practice] Humor lowers defenses and opens participation.
Why it matters: For at least two students I know of by name, the laughter in that room wasn't decoration. It was medicine, during a year that badly needed some.
What it looks like: A student who was checked out re-engaging because they didn't want to miss the joke.
What it requires: Give yourself explicit permission to be funny in your own classroom — it's not a departure from rigor, it's an entry point to it.
58. [Practice] Movement is not a break from learning; movement can be learning.
Why it matters: Building a shower-curtain tent for a survival challenge is a physics lesson wearing a costume.
What it looks like: Content genuinely embedded in a physical, hands-on challenge, rather than movement used only as a break from "real" instruction.
What it requires: Look for the academic content already hiding inside a physical or hands-on challenge before assuming you need to bolt it on separately.
59. [Foundation] Art and making belong beside reading and reasoning.
Why it matters: The puppet theater and the atelier from Chapter 3 are the same argument, told twice — art isn't a subject that competes with academics for time, it's a delivery vehicle for them.
What it looks like: A classroom where visitors sometimes ask if you're the art teacher, because the room is genuinely full of student-made work.
What it requires: Stop treating art and making as separate from "real" instructional time, and start building them in as a primary vehicle for it.

How It Works: The Practices Behind This Chapter

Why it matters. A real business with real customers and real money embeds academic content — fractions, inventory, customer service, planning for demand — inside genuine stakes no worksheet can replicate. Students aren't practicing math. They're using it, because the coffee shop doesn't run without it.
Materials needed. Basic supplies for whatever product you choose (baking supplies, simple crafts, etc.); a real or practice currency system; a specific savings goal worth working toward.
The protocol, step by step:
- Set a real, specific, meaningful goal the class actually wants — a field trip, a class purchase, something with a real price tag attached.
- Choose a product simple enough to produce reliably, but complex enough to require real planning (a recipe that has to be scaled, an inventory that has to be tracked).
- Assign real jobs — bakers, servers, a cashier, an inventory tracker — and rotate them so every student gets multiple roles over the life of the enterprise.
- Fold the math into the production itself. Scaling a recipe for sixty customers is the fractions lesson. Don't teach the fractions separately and then apply them — let the actual production be where the math happens.
- Track results honestly and adjust. When a product sells out or falls flat, use it as real data for the next week's planning, not just a fun fact.
- Build toward the goal visibly, so students can see the savings accumulate toward the thing they're actually working for.
Common mistakes. Making the enterprise a one-time event rather than a sustained, recurring structure — the real learning compounds over weeks, not a single day. Doing the planning math for students instead of embedding it in their actual roles. Losing sight of the original goal, which is what gives the whole enterprise its stakes.
Grade-level variation. For younger students, keep the product and the roles very simple (a single item, two or three roles) and handle currency concretely (real coins, simple counting). For older students, add real budgeting, profit tracking, and even basic marketing decisions.
What success looks like. Students correctly solving a real scaling or budgeting problem without being told it's "math time." The class reaching its goal through its own tracked effort, and being able to explain exactly how they got there.
The Immersive Problem Day
Why it matters. Breaking the daily schedule for one deeply engaging, open-ended problem does more for engagement and attendance than the same content spread thinly across many ordinary days — and it borrows directly from Odyssey of the Mind's model of sustained, open-ended problem-solving.
Materials needed. Varies by problem — craft and building supplies for a design challenge, a themed set of constraints for a scenario, whatever the specific problem requires.
The protocol, step by step:
- Pick a real, complex, open-ended problem with genuine constraints (a Mars habitat design, a survival-scenario challenge) rather than a single right answer.
- Set real constraints that force actual problem-solving — a budget, a material limit, a size restriction — rather than leaving the challenge too open to require real decisions.
- Let teams work through the entire problem in one extended block, rather than splitting it across many short sessions where momentum resets each time.
- Require a presentation or demonstration at the end, so the work has a real audience and a real point of accountability.
- Use a smaller version — a "spontaneous problem" — as a fifteen-minute reset in the middle of an ordinary block when attention is drifting, borrowing the same open-ended structure at a much smaller scale.
Common mistakes. Making the problem too open-ended, so students flounder without direction, or too constrained, so there's no real decision-making left. Skipping the presentation/demonstration step, which is where a lot of the real accountability and pride lives. Running these too rarely to build the "don't miss this day" culture that makes Rule 56 work.
Grade-level variation. For younger students, shorten the timeline and simplify the constraints considerably, keeping the core structure (real problem, real constraints, real presentation) intact. For older students, raise the complexity and let the constraints get more realistic and demanding.
What success looks like. Visibly higher engagement and attendance around these days compared to an ordinary week. Students referencing the problem and their solution weeks or months later, unprompted.
Puppet Theater for Literary and Social-Emotional Rehearsal
Why it matters. A puppet lets a child say something true — about a literary character's motivation, or about a hard social situation — without having to say it as themselves first. That distance is often exactly what makes real engagement possible.
Materials needed. Puppets (even simple hand-made ones work; higher-quality puppets extend what's possible but aren't required); a simple stage or curtain setup.
The protocol, step by step:
- Establish the same behavioral expectations for puppets as for the rest of the room, explicitly, before handing them out — a puppet is not exempt from the classroom's ohana rules, and this needs to be said out loud.
- Use puppets to act out literary elements or poetic devices directly — have a puppet demonstrate a character's motivation or a literary device in action, rather than just discussing it.
- Use puppets separately for social-emotional rehearsal — let a puppet say what a child might not be ready to say as themselves, about being bullied, about a hard feeling, about a difficult situation.
- Build toward a real performance for a real audience (a younger class works well) once students have rehearsed enough to be ready.
- Debrief what the puppet made possible — ask students what was easier to say or understand through the puppet than it would have been otherwise.
Common mistakes. Skipping the explicit behavioral expectations, which reliably leads to a puppet being used as a weapon in the first ten minutes. Only ever using puppets for entertainment rather than for the literary and social-emotional work they're genuinely suited for. Never building toward a real audience, which caps how seriously students take the rehearsal.
Grade-level variation. For younger students, keep puppet work simple and mostly literary (retelling a story, acting out a character). For older students, the social-emotional rehearsal use becomes more valuable, and puppet work can carry genuinely difficult content at a safe distance.
What success looks like. A concept that had been abstract becoming concrete and memorable after being acted out. A child engaging with a hard social topic through a puppet that they wouldn't have engaged with directly.
Humor as an Attention Mechanism
Why it matters. A well-timed joke recruits peer pressure in the direction of attention instead of against it — nobody wants to be the one who missed the punch line — and it lowers the defenses a struggling learner walks in with, without costing any instructional time.
Materials needed. None beyond genuinely funny material — a well-chosen read-aloud, your own timing, or a book chosen specifically for its humor (something like Horrible Histories or Horrible Science).
The protocol, step by step:
- Choose material with real comedic craft, not just silliness — the humor should be good enough to reward attention, not just fill space.
- Time a joke or surprise specifically to catch drifting attention, during a read-aloud or lesson, rather than only using humor as a scheduled break.
- Let the room's own reaction do the work. When most of the room laughs and a few students clearly missed it, that visible gap does more to re-engage the stragglers than a direct correction would.
- Follow genuine humor with genuine rigor immediately after. A laugh about something gross or absurd in history is a doorway into a real Socratic question about why that thing happened.
- Don't overuse it to the point it stops working. Humor recruits attention because it's not constant — pace it deliberately.
Common mistakes. Using humor purely for entertainment with no follow-through into real content, which wastes its attention-recruiting power. Overusing it until it becomes background noise rather than a genuine surprise. Choosing material that's silly without being clever, which doesn't reward the attention it asks for.
Grade-level variation. For younger students, simpler, more physical humor works well. For older students, humor can carry more genuine wit and irony, and the follow-up discussion can go considerably deeper.
What success looks like. Visibly re-engaged students following a well-timed joke. A room that laughs together and then argues seriously about the content immediately after, without missing a beat.
