Grade Level Reading Assessment

Free Reading Assessment! Free Reading Comprehension Placement Test! Valid reading assessments must measure students strengths and weaknesses. Before beginning a reading intervention program or individual literacy plan (ILP) study and try your assessments on a cross-section of students to determine efficacy and validity. The tests below and grade level word knowledge assessments are a collective sample to gain personal knowledge and experience assessing knowledge.

The test below and links are placed here in one place for educational purposes...
Free Remedial Reading Assessment 206 pp PDF

A reading age test is a tool used to assess an individual's reading ability and determine their reading level. It is often administered to children and young students in educational settings to evaluate their reading skills and track their progress over time.

The test typically involves the individual reading a series of passages or sentences and then answering questions related to the content or demonstrating comprehension in some way. The passages and questions are designed to be age-appropriate, with increasing complexity as the test progresses.

The test results provide an indication of the individual's reading age, which represents the level of reading ability they have reached compared to their peers. For example, if a 10-year-old child has a reading age of 12, it means their reading ability is similar to that of an average 12-year-old.

Reading age tests are valuable for educators and parents as they can help identify students who may be struggling with reading or those who are advanced readers. The results can inform targeted instruction and support to address any reading difficulties or to provide appropriate challenges for more advanced readers.

TOE BY TOE READING TEST
The purpose of the Toe By Toe Reading Test? By completing a Toe By Toe reading test prior to starting the manual and then again upon completion, schools and other academic institutions will be able to demonstrate the improvement in student’s reading ability i.e. the value added.

The Hertfordshire Reading Test

Schonell Reading Test: Reading Age
The child should read the words left to right. When a word gets difficult, ask the child to sound it out. If the child can't say the word, then go on to the next one. The proctor supervising the test will give one mark for each word correctly pronounced - even if the reader self corrects. The proctor will not make corrections. No prompting. No hurrying. If the reader mis-pronounces slightly as in postage with a short 'o', the first time, then ask for the word again, marking it correct if the reader has self corrected. Otherwise, do not ask for a word to be re-read. If you do not give away the pronunciation of words that the reader does not know, then this same test may be used again at a later date to assess progress as a result of a teaching program.

Reading age = ( (Number of words correct) / 10 ) + 5
Reading Skills Assessment Tool (Word Attack)

Assessment Tools for Reading Comprehension

Have your child read and pronounce correctly each letter or word starting with "A", the first 8 "words" are letters, then progress from left to right. When your child misses 5 words in a row, or is frustrated, then stop. Next, add the number of words using the number in brackets to help you, which keeps a tally of how many words your child has read up to that row.

As you can see this scale goes all the way up to college level. This test only assesses decoding (reading words); it does not assess reading comprehension or spelling.

Example: If your child reads all the way up to "quality" but misses the next 5 or 6 words then they would have a score of 44. A score of 44 = 4.4 grade level or 4th grade and fourth month.
