Sight words account for a huge percentage (up to 85%) of the words used in children's literature. The advantage of recognizing sight words automatically is that readers can concentrate on the meaning of the words and text, reading comprehension is improved when student are not spending all their energy decoding. Advocates of whole-word instruction believe that being able to recognize a large number of sight words gives students a head start to literacy.
